Don't know why people keeps on having the notion that it will cannibalise sales of the M4.

M4 ZCP has 331kw/450hp which will still be faster than the 400hp M2 on the straight. They might make the ZCP standard from MY18 onwards and then further release the M4 CSL.

BMW is forward looking. Why shouldn't they increase the performance of their cars as time goes by? Stiff competitions from AMG, Audi and Alfa means instead of freshening every 4-5 years, they do it every 2-3 years.
This...

...and this:

The reason I stopped looking at the m4 was that it was simply too much money compared to other options. The m2 at $10k more isn't such a good option either.
But the $55 won't be fitted in the regular M2 but in a special C$L whatever version.

There was reference in a post to an further progress M4 model similar to an M2 model to keep the gap. That also points away from a GTS and ZCP, as they exist.

Time will tell.
Its already been hinted that the first test mules will have "underneath" modifications only.

To me it doesn't make sense why they would have spent the R&D money to beef up the regular N55 if they're going to drop in the S55 into the standard model a year later? Could have just done that from the beginning and just detuned it to 370hp but apparently the N55 upgrade was cheaper.

But could it be the B58?

We've had first and second-hand reports of the S55 being installed in test cars for several months now. One is video recorded at the 'ring and it's a big deal now? I can't understand how this is suddenly news.

Until BMW confirms they're commercializing it, this could be more unofficial tooling around the 'ring by M engineers.

Thought they would just bump the output of the current engine or maybe a higher output tuned B58, although the latter didn't make a lot of sense from a research and development perspective. That's why I'm intrigued by the idea of a detuned S55. For now it's all speculation; I'll believe it when I see it.
1) Further development of B58 for m2 makes more sense, upon which S58 will base for next generation m3/4.

2) The slightly laggier S55 fitted to m2 is no good answer to some of us. Sharing with N55 the bore and stroke dimensions, S55 needs just to be phased out too, though the cooling tech and twin turbo setup would stay with the more efficient S58 which should also address the S55 lagginess with the long stroke. Make S58 bottom end strong and efficient enough to rev high is all.

3) Fitting a larger compressor to N55 turbo would be the perfect solution to current m2, personally. Retain responsiveness yet boost power a little bit. Enough.

It sounds plausible.

By the time this comes to market the M3/M4 will be discontinued and the next generation will come a year after that. Since at that time we will be seeing the X3M and X4M with the S55 engine, it makes sense to use the same engine in the M2, bump the price and discontinue the N55.

The launch of the Z4M coincided with the end of the e46 M3 production.

In this thread(just like every other thread on this subject) :

People with M2s say the base car isn't getting the S55, and people waiting for allocations say that it is.

No way that would happen. Maybe the B58.

Test the market of the m2 before pouring massive into development is a logical reason.

S55 in M2 is real.
The question is when and in which M2 model.
I have an M2 on order for 05/2017. Really don't know what to make of this.

Wouldn't it be easier to bolt the M3/M4 twin-turbo onto the existing N55?

I think this really depends on what the overall, end result looks like.

Are other components going to be upgraded as well? Are they going to try and trim the weight down? Better areo?

Not sure it makes sense to plug a bigger and more capable engine (tuning-wise) into the existing car. IF they are actually testing the S55, then I would think it has to be for an additional layer in the M2 family.

BMW has a history of changing engines early / mid production cycle. For example, I got an 06 330i, then the very next year it changed to a twin turbo motor 335i. They will make changes if the competition gets too ahead. Very reactive and not market innovators anymore.
