Traction Mode

Don't know if this is new to the MY 2017 cars but I haven't read about it over here before.
The famous "comfort + quick DSC button press" (hidden exhaust mode) turns the car into "Traction Mode" which appears on the display like Comfort/Sport/Sport+ do.
It says that it has limited stability control and improved traction and shows a car on a rough surface.

Is this new? If so, we can start referring to the "hidden exhaust mode" simply as "traction mode".

And here's a video of the nice burbles (indoor). Must make a video of the iDrive display.

That has been the F22 behavior all along - including my '14 228i. I always assumed that's what was happening in the hidden exhaust mode thread, and wondered why people would want to mess with tc just for exhaust sounds ...

It does show on Traction mode and it does pronounce the burbling sound.. you can appreciate it on your car (video you loaded) but seeing its DCT that explains why it doesn't make so much burbling.

On the 6 speed between shifts you hear much more burbling and popping and if you let it hang on the gear it is more pronounced..

I just tried this for the first time!!! Lots of burbling when I let off the throttle! I guess this is the mode I should drive on the track in? Sport+ was very intrusive and caused my brakes to get smoking hot.

On my DCT I just lift the throttle between upshifts sometimes and it's burbling like a vulcano.

Even more so in sport+ and exhaustflaps opened (MPE)

Fantastic.

Cheers

Try it out yes. On my first track with the car, which probably will be on the nurburgring later this year, day I plan on running stock and systematically try out all these options to get to know the car.
But judging from other users feedback it seems like the linear throttle map in comfort might be the best one for the track.

No you want sport+ on track, it does make the pedal sensitive but it's exactly as you'd want for track work.

In comfort you feel like you're just waiting forever.

Ric I agree with WFS, you wan't to be on Sport+ on the track..

That Traction mode burbles a lot but you feel the throttle response change negatively compared to the Sport+ pedal reaction..

Sport+ was horrible on the track. It was very intrusive and killed my brakes. Someone had posted the article of the different modes I need to go through it and see which would be a better mode for the track.

Hmmm, let me know what you find out cause I plan to track mine..

Cause the other thing is turning all assistance off (DSC off) BUT I find that dangerous unless you REALLY know what you are doing and can handle the car completely!

Here is a quick video I just did. Traction mode doesn't seem to be intrusive but still haven't put it under some real pressure as yet. The throttle isn't as nice or sensitive as sport+ but your not making less power. I would love to do a track session in sport+ and another in traction mode. Need to order my pagid pads first tho.

Well that's the least intrusive settings for the DSC. The next step is to turn it completely off.

I would like this setting with throttle and steering from sport+

BMW puts the throttle map in 'sport' when you're in the 'true' track setting (all nannies off). I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they're trying to tell us something.

In addition to the nannies still being annoying in 'sport+' mode, I can think of at least two corners on our local tracks where that throttle mapping makes life difficult. It's pretty obnoxious for autocross too, which is why I've done precisely one run in that mode.

When doing Autocross do you go full off then?

Yep. Also when on the track. It's a very easy car to control.

Can you explain how Sport+ wore out your brakes? I can't seem to make the connection. Thanks!

In Sport+ DTC is active and when the computer feels that the car is getting unstable it uses the brakes to keep the car leveled.

I don't see that as a bad thing, in these instances you're over driving the car and not really in control not going any quicker.
I found sport+ to be quite good on the track, fastest gear changes, louder inside so you can hear your shift points with MDM there to save my arse should I get things wrong.

I'm sure there may be some tracks with camber changes and corners where MDM may get caught out but in general it's a good medium for most drivers pushing on a track.
