Its not meant to be a defeatist outlook, just a realistic one. If you're in a position to be getting no questions asked msrp build slots for these cars, then you obviously aren't an average customer.
It's possible it was an M4 GTS that was on the floor rather than a build slot.

In that case, any dealership would be desperate to move it, as having one of those sitting around for a while has a serious impact on your dealership image and may impact future allocations.

My car history isn't that great, purchased many new cars, pretty much all under $60k of which a few BMWs.

I don't disagree with you really. If that dealer that offered it to me had a customer that spent 7 figures with them and had already expressed interest Im sure they would have sold it to that person! I guess it's just a timing thing, if you can find a dealer that hasn't dished it out for whatever reason it may be obtainable. That's all I'm saying. It won't work out for everyone.

I don't think it was as there aren't any in the states yet. This was a few months ago.

Dealer asked me as well before letting me place a deposit. I think it effects their allocation from corporate.

Dealers, if they even get allocations, will give places to customers who make them the most money even if they appeared last minute. So unless you're one of them, you'll probably be out of luck. Dealers taking deposits for this type of product are being disingenuous, no more, no less. They probably think they can coerce you into moving the deposit over to a different car when they are unable to give you a build slot.

If however it happens and is not a limited run (unlikely) then who knows.
Agree with most of this. I expressed interest when collecting my M2 back in April and they said they are happy to put me on the list if I paid a deposit, also said they had taken one that week also. Buying an M2 was not enough to allow me to get on the so far non existent CSL waiting list without another deposit which annoyed me. At the same time, I understand them requiring a deposit to put people putting their name down everywhere, I think they should wait for the car's announcement before taking anyone's money. Also, if it has 2 seats then I am out anyway as there are better cars I would sacrifice the back seats for.

They're usually pretty flexible with this sort of thing. I spoke w my dealer and when I did the GC deposit it covered any 2 variant I want so I can choose M2 or 240 if I decide I need AWD.

I've been trying to get a spot on one of these unicorns for 6 months.
Basically all dealers in my area are planning on having bidding wars on these limited models so they won't put anyone on a list.
My dealer is expecting some douche to pay over 200.000$ for the GTS

I'm #1 for the 30 Jahre M2 special edition in 2046.

Think I have to retake my test before then!

My dealer does not take deposits to be on a wait list. Never did. He has an M4GTS coming and the owner is keeping it for his personal collection. That car had no list they were going to keep since it would not be for sale.

I've had a deposit on the M2 CSL since August of 2015 ....

#1 in writing at MSRP. Of course refundable.

No harm in giving my dealer a free loan when interest is near 0%. lol.

M2

#2 M2 CSL/GTS
#1 M2 grand Coupe

Since our garage has a 1M and M2 there might be a difficult decision ahead. Good problem to have.

I'll get on a waitlist for a car that's 15 years away as long as I don't have to pay anything. Worst thing that would happen is I forget I'm on the list.

My dealer keep bugging me about the M2 and I was initially interested but after long thoughts I said it's not a big enough improvement (car or financially) for me to switch from M235i to M2.

He then proceeded to chat about the possible M2 GTS and he said I can put a deposit down, or else I'll miss out just like the M4 GTS

If so, are you on an official list? Or just an, "indication of interest" if a potential list is created down the road (upon official announcement of the car)? Did you have to put a deposit down?

Thanks
I am number one on two dealer lists. I have deposits down with both dealerships. I put the deposits down several months ago.

My M2 just arrived over the weekend. It took 7 wks total shipping from Germany after our M Tour ended back in June.
I'm 1st on dealer allocation list for the CSL, should it materialize.

After bugging my SA for over 6 months, I finally got a call from him today that I can place a deposit for a M2 CSL. First on the list at my dealer.

I think they know something now. Not sure what or if it's that much info but my SA also recently finally admitted to me that one is coming after saying it's not happening for months.
