I doubt it will have LCI - they start building the car this November and LCI isn't until next year, correct?

Also, I had one of the very first 235s delivered on here - it started production in December, arrived at the dealer in late February and I got it on March 2 IIRC. So April might be a bit longer than what we will see in reality...

Look at the positive side of things: by the time that the US version goes into production, BMW will have sorted out all 'first time' early adopters niggles - the fine folks at the Leipzig factory will be completely into the M2 groove/zone by then.

It's pretty lame that we aren't getting more news.
And what's this talk of an M2 CSL that you keep teasing us about??

Did you notice the M4 GTS and the M2 are scheduled to be produced for and arrive in the US at the same time? Do you think there is something behind that or is it just coincidence?

Yes, but they said production begins in March for US. If there is still production for the US in November, it should deliver earlier than April.

Excuse my ignorance and lack of goggle use...But what is the difference between CSL and GTS version of M cars?

I think it's a matter of emphasis.
GTS (Gran Turismo Sport) - emphasizes the cars power and not so much weight
CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) - emphasizes the cars weight reduction and not so much power.
What's the crossover point from one type the other? I don't know of any objective criteria. Manufacturers eyeball, I guess.
If the M4 GTS CSL version actually gets produced, I wonder if they'll drop one term or use both? Whichever they feel will make them the most money, says my cynical side.

I thought it was mentioned that there would be no M4 CSL because they had already engineered the vehicles to be light weight. I mean I guess in the world of BMW, today's fiction is tomorrow's reality. Remember when they said there would be no M2?

It appears to me that when a BMW executive (M division or otherwise) talks about a BMW CSL car, inevitably, the the conversation touches on the BMW CSL cars of the past. And how those cars contributed to, not only the success of the company, but, at one point, it's very survival. For that historical reason, BMW may hold the title "CSL" in high regard and not be inclined to assign it to just any powerful car they build. But, rather, to a car, clearly preeminent, not because of its engine, but, because of it's light weight construction. That car would provide the "Homage" (a word they use a lot) they feel is adequate for their history. Which may be the reason the M4, even though a somewhat lightweight coupe, got the title M4 GTS instead of M4 CSL.
Pure speculation on my part as I while away the time waiting for the next reveal

Artemis, since you're always on top of stuff like this - when again was the first 1M teaser released with respect to it's reveal?

I'm wondering what the option packages will look like. I just put a deposit down for the M2 and I'm wondering what kind of options this car will have vs the M235i and other M cars.

Does anyone know if sat radio can be coded of the car is pre-wired? Or is there more to it than that? Sat radio is about the only option I need, the others are just wants.

Being a fellow Canadian, what's your guess of the estimated base price in C$'s for the M2? With the weak dollar I say around 60k.

60k would be way to much for an M2, especially when the CLA45 starts around 50k. We canadians would be better off buying a GT350 mustang for cheaper than 60k than investing into an m2 at that point

I also guesstimate about $60k, probably just over. Fully loaded with all the boxes checked, I'm gonna say $78k.

It seems that the e92 M3 GTS was more extreme than the e46 M3 CSL was. The e92 GTS had a rear wing, roll cage, no rear seats, light weight titanium exhaust, punched out V8 (from 4.0 to 4.4), making I believe 444 hp. It weighed 300 pound less than the standard e92 M3.

According to wikipedia, the e46 M3 was 240 pounds lighter than a regular M3 (with or without SMG?) and an increase of 17 hp.

Whereas the e46 CSL weighed less than than the e92 M3 GTS, the weight savings were greater when comparing the regular e92 M3 to the e92 M3GTS, than it was when comparing the regular e46 M3 to the e46 M3 CSL. And the jump in hp from regular e92 M3 to e92 M3 GTS was greater than the jump in hp from the regular e46 M3 to e46 M3 CSL.

FWIW: an attempt of a brief 1M timeline:
  • 8 July 2010: teaser video "Step 1";
  • 27 August 2010: teaser video "Unveiled";
  • late August 2010: teased at a private event in the US (BMW CCA Oktoberfest 2010) - no full reveal;
  • 6 October 2010: Paris teaser video "Unveiled part 2";
  • 18 November 2010: revealed to a small group in Leipzig (including a couple of forum fellows);
  • 20 November 2010: teaser video "Step 2" (about the 18 November 2010 reveal);
  • 7 December 2010: teased in London at Autosport Awards 2010 " - Joy is unveiled" ("Unveiled part 3");
  • 8 December 2010: teaser video "Step 3" ("And now it's your turn");
  • 13 December 2010: Skiddmark full reveal video made available on YT ("In the Studio with BMW's 1 Series M Coupe | SkiddMark");
  • 16 December 2010: BMW full reveal video through Bimmerpost made available on YT ("11+ Min Video of BMW 1 series M Coupe (1M). Acceleration, Track, E30 M3 Footage");
  • January 2011: world premiere at Detroit Motor Show;
  • March 2011: start of production
  • May 2011: raving car journalists reviews pour in, the 1M is (un)available at ///M dealerships (first deliveries) and the frenzy goes ballistic;
  • 2011-2012: release of three commercials ("Walls" - "Helipad" - "Perfect Balance");
  • 2014: the 1M resale prices take a significant hit after the introduction of the M3/M4 - oh wait, let me read that again...
Maybe BMW plans an M2 small group reveal this Summer ?
