Exclamation Ethanol Sensor Info + Install Instructions?

I know theres been a handful of folks on here who've done it. Just looking for some more information.

I'll be installing a Dorch Stage 2 HPFP this winter (along with some other goodies) and I figured it might be a good time to install an E-Sensor to track ethanol content in my fuel while running the BM3 Stage 2+ E30 tune.

Had a few questions for those of you who have done this:

1) Which sensor/kit should I get? I've been eyeing the Fuel-It! Kit, but am not sure if I need the optional sensor fittings. I'll be using OEM fuel lines, if that matters. I know the Dorch comes with a replacement line from the HPFP to the disconnect on the factory lines. Is there another sensor I should be looking at?

2) How exactly do I install this thing? Can I just drop it inline where the fuel line from the HPFP connects to the line going to the LPFP? Where exactly is that? (from videos of other BMW's, it appears to be under the car.)

3) Is there any additional hardware needed that I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance!

The Bend Calibration kits are better than the Fuel-It offerings. They also offer a high quality fuel filter which exceeds the bosch specifications for the fuel system. Their bracket and filter bolts right up and the fuel lines plug and play; super easy to install.

Or you can just get their basic fuel line kit that taps right into the OE lines.

Since you're running BM3, you can buy whichever bluetooth communication device that you want; you won't need the Zeitronix ECA2 CAN device that they offer (which sends the ECU the flex content for automatic calibration.)

There's a few people with N55's running the Bend Ultimate kits on here; they bolt up just the same as the S55's. I have one as well and it's great. They also have very well written instructions.

Agree with Commanderwiggin . The Bend Calibration kit is a really nice solution and has all the hardware you need. I'm currently running a flex fuel tune on EcuTek with it right now on my N55 M2 with no issues. You also wont find the ID-750 filter or that filter mounting bracket on any other kit in the market, which many people don't think about.

Since you're on BM3, the Zeitronix unit will integrate with the Canbus expansion board that they're working on once that is released (for flex fuel). If you get the kit in the meantime, you could probably get one of the Zeitronix gauges to display the ethanol content or go with Commanderwiggin 's suggestion with forgoing the Zeitronix unit and getting another Bluetooth communication device to display the ethanol content.

Thanks for the info you two. Do you happen to know what kind of sensor those kits come with? I'm thinking of going with the basic flex-fuel kit, and adding the fuel-it BT analyzer. I'm pretty sure the Zeitronix unit isnt going to work the BM3's canbus interface expensive. From what I gather, it has inputs for standard analog (0-5v) signal from the sensor. Hence the reason with going with the Fuel-It BT adapter with 0-5v output wire.

Are these sensor's plugs pretty universal? I.e. if I get the Bend Kit, will I be able to plug in the Fuel-it Analyzer?

I misspoke. To run flex fuel on BM3 you would only need to run either the Zeitronix kit or the BM3 CANBus expansion board since they integrate with the CANBus and relay the info to the DME. Per PTF's preview thread on the board, they plan on making bootmod3 support third party products like the Zeitronix kit:

Regarding the type of sensor on the Bend Kit, it uses a Continental sensor which should be supported by the Fuel-It Bluetooth analyzer (Same plug).

Nice! Thanks so much for the info. It sounds like it may just be worth getting the whole kit from Bend instead of waiting for the BM3 board. I must have missed the part where they said they were going to support 3rd party CAN expansion boards.

The continental/acdelco sensors have the same electrical plugs so no issue there. The older gm style sensor nobody uses anymore so that is an oddball but I wouldn't worry about that.

As for can communication, I wouldn't worry about that yet with bm3...likely be a while. Bluetooth is probably your best bet for now.

I sent an email to Bend, and they said they use Gm sensors.

In the attached photos, they use the smallest sensors (this particular one is an ACDelco-GM one) not to be confused with the big oddball GM sensor in the second attached photo. Bend has pics all over their shop too.

The exact part number is 13577429. This is listed under the Fuel-It Bluetooth product's compatibility list under the Continental part # section.

Naming seems to be confusing, which Commanderwiggin has brought up, but nonetheless, the part is compatible with the Fuel-It product.

Nice. Thanks for the info. Still debating in what route I wanna go. I may put this off until BM3 releases their flex fuel support.

Going to be waiting a few years for BM3 flex fuel at this rate

We'll see. Maybe before next year's track days begin though at the track, I can just do a manual measurement and fill with cans, plus some guestimations to get close to E30.

Curiosity has me, why not go with ECUTek which has a proven solution out for true flexfuel along with the plethora of other features?

I tend to change things around quite a bit and am nowhere near done. I like the features that BM3 supports at the price point they are at. Eventually I may switch to something like ECUTek, but not today.

BM3 is around the corner with a crap ton of features about to drop! Best community I’ve ever been a part of and they continue to develop and update it constantly. Join the facebook group if you’re not on there already they’re not very active on this forum
