Big fan of the Yokohama AD08R here! Haven't run them on the M2 yet but have gone through several sets on a Cayman S. I found them to be a great balance of dry traction, wet traction, heat tolerance, and low road noise for that DD duty. These are some of the best tires I've driven to date since Dunlop stopped making the Star Spec ZI, and in the Cayman they'd go pretty long before getting greasy. I cannot compared to the RE-71R though from what I've heard they probably would out do the AD08R in the dry.
Long life was not a strong suit, though the Cayman was pretty hard on tires with weight on the rears and not nearly enough reasonable options for getting camber into the fronts. Last edited by TimOudin; 05-15-2017 at 09:39 PM.. |

All, what about a moderately competitive autocross tire? Is the MPSS in a 265 fr/275 rear or maybe even 275 all around going to be somewhat competitive?
I'd love to get RE71 but this is my quasi daily driver. IMO you can't touch the RE71 for autocross. I had them on a modified Evo and it flew. Would the RE-11 be a better autocross/daily driver tire? They are discontinued but looks like tire rack has a few sets left. |

Just ran these (Sport Cup 2) at the Glen - I had my dealer install them on the factory wheels pre-delivery (245/265). Pricey relative to the competition but I'm very impressed by the grip level and soft breakaway. For me, it was good for 2:15 on an otherwise stock car.

I just ordered some Pirelli Trofeo R tires and am going to run these on my OE wheels until Apex ships my new FL-5 wheels in January 2018. After that, I'll switch back to my usual NT05 tires or possibly BFG R1 tires. You can't beat the performance of the NT05 for the price.
You absolutely can run MPSS, MP4S, RE11, DSS, etc tires on the track, but they're ultimately street tires and they'll fall apart if you're a seasoned driver that's pushing the car to even 8/10. |

Not running an M2, but saw this tire thread. Running M235i with tuner boost up to 275 Hp at the crank and significant increased torque. Had same issue as rich8566 with MPSS- got greasy at temperature and even though wear was even across face, the walls were soft and you get flaking and chunking of rubber down to the steel belts on the outside edges—would not recommend them for track. Right now running Hancook RS4's (235/R40/18 F, 255/R35/18 R) and they are very nice. Heat up well, maintain lots of grip, even wear, will last longer than RE71's. Paired with 19 lb 18" rims, shaved 3-5 seconds off lap time on track where 1:20 is an excellent time.

Any thoughts on running a 265/40/19 RE71 on all four tires? Square setup should make rotation easier and a 40 series tire would add 2 mph or so to the top speed in 2nd gear. Plus they are about $50 cheaper a tire than 35 series

If these tires change the speed in any gear then that amounts to a change in gearing. So in this specific instance wouldn't this amount to slower acceleration? Also, what about the weight of this tire - can I assume it is heavier than the OEM tires? Last question - wouldn't you need to change out the staggered wheels since I don't think you'd want to rotate the rear rims to the front.

Lol, whoops the fronts would look like monster tires with 265/40.
It would be slower acceleration day to day but might help with not having to shift on certain autocross courses where there is a long straight and not worth it to shift to 3rd and back down to 2nd at the next turn. Running 275 or 285/35 would also do the same thing and lots of people are at least going 275/35 on the rear. |

I finally broke down and got the TRM 18" wheels and a set of square 265/35/18 Hankook RS4 and ran out at VIR a couple weekends ago. I chose them over the RE71 because performance reviews were so close across forums and Tire Rack + $50 less/tire + universally being regarded as a much longer wearing tire = better overall value. Tires felt amazing compared to the stock MPSS. Granted this is my first experience with any upgraded tire but the grip was extremely confidence inspiring and I knocked about 4-5 seconds off my best previous time (best now 2:13.75). Also very impressed with ride quality, noise levels, and wear. It doesn't even really look like they've been used and I beat on them for 2 days... to be fair we had some rain the first day so that certainly helps. Overall very happy with the purchase and will update as I do more events.

If you can get them to fit the BFG Rivals are a solid track & Solo 2 tire.
17 P255/40ZR17 89W 18 P275/35ZR18 87W P315/30ZR18 91W P335/30ZR18 95W On my 2017 MX-5 RF I run the 245/40/18 Rival 1.5's. I've also run the Hankook RS-3's in the past and they are a solid durable option as well. There are tires I ran on a FR-S and the MX-5. On my 510WHP EVO I run BFG R1's. 285/30/18's. You would be surprised how many HPDE's I can squeeze out of a set. (Not for the street) YMMV, HAZMAT 2004 Mazda Rev It Up Finalist HPDE Instructor 2002- to present |

I'm using four 265/35/18 RE-71Rs on Apex EC-7 18X9.5" wheels for track work. Nice since they can be rotated to even out wear. No rubbing, no issues.
Oh, all four also fit in the back seat of the M2 for transport!!! |

I'm using 275/35r18 Hankook RS-4s. I have over 30 laps on them. Not happy. They are not faster than the MPSS. Pretty similar lap times. On the other hand, they do seem to be a durable tire. Anways, Im going to be ordering a set of RE-71Rs soon.

I've run MPSC 2 tires in the factory sizes (star spec) and very pleased with them at LRP. I have stock suspension and definitely need camber plates - I can see the front shoulders are overheating.
I drove the car to the track to remove the mold release compound, and they are great on dry roads (not noisy but quite stiff - no shock there). |
