Traveling to Detroit from Phoenix to see the M2

A buddy and I have been wanting to go to the North American International Auto Show (Detroit) for some time, we go to SEMA every other year and are always looking for something else car related to do. Anyway this year we have the perfect excuse to go to Detroit, the M2 will be there. I am on a couple of waiting lists so it will be nice to be able to see it in person before I go all in and place my order. I will do my best to take photos (I am sure there will be plenty) and report my impressions. Looking forward to the experience of one of the most important car shows in the industry, hope it is worth the travel time and expense.

If I can offer any advise. Stay in Windsor, ON and take the tunnel bus over to Cobo Hall. It will be much cheaper than staying in Detroit. Although, Detroit is pretty much broken, so it may be cheap there too lol

NAIAS starts on Jan 11, 2016.

But Jan 13 is the day to ///M2rk in your agenda (if I was properly informed).

May I ask what dealerships here in AZ that you are placed on a waiting list? Also have they told you that they aren't releasing any info until January? Thanks, I'm looking at placing an order at Chapman but may not get slot for 2016 M2 would have to wait.

I would highly advise spending the $100 or whatever it is to do the black tie preview night assuming they have one. Did that for the CLA45 premier in Chicago then went the next day for regular show. MUCH better if you go for the black tie event. Less crowded, cocktails etc but most importantly you can actually get into all of the cars. All the stuff that's up on stage and roped off during the show is open that night.

The only $100 event is the industry preview. The black tie event is a $400 a head charity preview ($390 is tax deductible )

Wow that's steep. But I guess after taxes it's what $250 really out of pocket? Not cheap but if you're making a trip just to see the car maybe worth it in the grand scheme of things.

I'm going as well. Probably the 18th-20th, hoping it won't be as busy on the weekdays... Any pointers from those who have been before? Planning to stay at the MGM Grand in downtown Detroit. Going to be cold as F for a Floridian like me.

Wear a few layers to stay warm. I moved from Miami to Wisconsin for school and it was brutal at first. Insulate to keep your body warm at least. You can always peel off layers and toss them in a backpack.

There's a lot to see. Cobo Hall is gigantic and can be over whelming. Don't forget to go downstairs. Go early, keep hydrated as it's really hot in the convention centre. Also, even during the week, it's busy as hell. Kids running around and people will always get in your way while taking pictures. Take a good camera with a decent flash/filter combo. The lighting is good, but usually a bit on the darker side around the exotics and concepts.

Other than that, walk slowly and enjoy the show.

I was offered slots with all of the dealers, I ended up going with BMW of Tucson and have spot 4. Not sure how much allocation they will get, the manager told me that because some guys change their minds or are on several lists 4 might be high enough even if the supply is tight. He dais they expect information in February and orders going in around March or April.

I was hoping to do exactly that but my buddy cannot get the time off of work so we have to stick with a weekend trip.

I had to do something similar when I looked at the S3 in Chicago. Even if the car is up on a platform, tell one of the staff there that you've got the car ordered and would really appreciate being able to see it up close - that you're deciding on options etc. In my case at least the woman took me up on stage, let me spend an hour with the car. Even turned off the turntable after I tripped once while walking around not paying attention. It's amazing what people will do for you if you ask nicely.
