Drove in ICE storm

We had a bit of an icy day yesterday. When I left work to head home I found that we had been having icy rain all afternoon and the ground was coated in Ice. The roads (secondaries) were fairly icy.

1. My Car was encased in ICE. - my frameless front doors opened without a problem.
2. The roads were coated in ICE. - my M2 had no problem handling the icy roads due to snow tires.
3. If i deliberately tried to get the tires to spin, the tires did so but the car stayed straight and I had no problems getting home up our very icy hill (about 2.5 miles of driving up hill (about 1200 feet of elevation)).

So, frameless windows, not a problem. Winter driving, not a problem.

Get over it......drive.

Mike

Same here with Michelin Xice3. The M2 is very competent in snow and ice with the winter tires.

Good to hear you made it home safe in the ice.

When i left work yesterday, i had to drive home in the 70s and sunny weather, it was a rough one

Woah. Even my Jeep was a little sketch in 8-10" of snow. That's crazy, especially with how little ground clearance the M2 has!

I have 19" blizzaks and my car was all over the road with barely any acceleration. Forget the 300 feet downhill- it was sliding with almost zero throttle. I had them on my z4 and 350z and it was never as sketchy as these. I'm going to sell the winter setup and go with something entirely different next winter. This was through fresh snow and ice later on.

Looks like less than five inches....snow is below splitter, ground clearance is 4.8 inches on M2.

Problem is most //M winter sets are based around performance snow tires. I found as soon as I focused on true snow and ice tire with a smaller rim that I got very good results. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 snows which are amazing. (Hardest names to remember). Definitely softer ride and taller sidewalls are spongy but in New York roads are filled with gravel and sand as often as snow and ice...the is no performance driving until Spring. Also, I enjoy the sharp distinction of my summer tires when Spring comes. Nokian isn't sold through TireRack which is unfortunate because I'm a huge supporter of them.

Have you ever heard of a plow?

No car or truck can get through 10" of snow comfortably, so the roads get plowed 2 or 3 times during the day.

I thought I was doing the same by getting blizzaks over the alpins. I'll definitely drop down to 18" and reconsider the tires going on it next winter.

I'm running the 18" Alpins and so far they have been great. Kinda meh on fluffy loose snow, but great on everything else - in particular, I was impressed with the performance on ice, way above my expectations.

Which Blizzaks did you go with?

There is a significant difference in deep snow and ice traction between the LM-32 and the WS-80.

I really recommend Michelin Pilot Alpins 640M square 235 18
or 235 18front and 255/35 18 at the back. Supersporty and grippy/traction for a wintertyre(even on dry/wet roads)

If I had to drive with them 24/7/365 I would do that, they are SO good!

@gmzanatta has the same setup on the pic above.

Cheers
Robin

Its refreshing to have an M2 thread about the ice on the hood instead of the ICE under it.
