The consensus is that the M2 Competition will be replacing the base M2. If that is indeed what happens, BMW cannot and most probably will not be able to raise the price of the car too much. It would mostly be priced in the low 60K USD range. At that point, you need to ask yourself what people would opt for: Whether it would be a new N55 M2 at 53K or new S55 M2 at 60K. I would personally go for the S55 equipped M2 at 60K even if I could get a used 2018 N55 M2 at a discount of say 50K USD. But that's just me.

A lot of people here including current M2 owners swear by the N55 exhaust and state that as the reason for preferring the N55 equipped M2 even at the expense of maybe some of the performance. If I was in your shoes, I would sell now and wait for the competition and/or another variant.

I did something similar with my M235i and got out before the resale values really plummeted.

Yeah but now without the m235i you sit around on these forums wondering if they will ever make that CSL, and if so, could you even get one?

I mean I could sell the M2 today, but then I have to wait between now and however long it takes to get the M2 Competition. So then I am buying some used car to hold me over a year or two until I can get an M2 Competition that I think I want, but I don't even know all the details or pricing yet. It's possible when the details are known I won't want it or I can't get it new because too much demand.

I think if I had another car I liked driving and I was low on the list somewhere I would go that route, but neither of those is true for me.

Any thoughts at this stage on how the pricing / residual value scenario is likely to play out as I’d appreciate the benefit of your knowledge and insight. I fully understand it’s my call ultimately but it will assist my decision whether to put my current car up for sale now or whether to wait and see. Decisions decisions…..
Evolution of residual values of the base M2: IMHO the honest answer is that no sound answers are possible right now.

The M2 Competition has not even been released: zero official information regarding the total package and the price-list. I am not related to BMW or, more generally, the car industry.

Furthermore, IMHO even BMW cannot precisely predict how the market and car press will react to the M2 Competition. BMW is gonna sell it, so it expects the car to sell well. But will it be as well-received as expected ?

I assume that a lot of those who wanted an M2, got one in the meantime and I equally assume that it would be a mistake to expect the majority of M2 owners to consider a trade-in for an M2 Competition (except if BMW offers very attractive conditions for current M2 owners ('early adopters') - something I don't expect to happen).

And as time moves on, (tax) legislation and city regulations can influence car sales. Not only for (high performance) petrol cars, but also for electric cars and hybrid cars: see for example https://www.wsj.com/articles/teslas-...nge-1499598003 ("Tesla Sales Fall to Zero in Hong Kong After Tax Break Is Slashed")).

As you see: assumptions galore - speculation ŕ gogo.

Feel free to decide what you deem appropriate. If I were you, I'd first wait for the official 'M2 Competition' release, in order to make an informed choice/decision. And in the meantime use the car for the purpose that you purchased it for: a means of transport and driving joy facilitator.

Guys

I’m hearing from my dealer that M2 Competition will be limited and they don’t want to have a waitlist. They will only get 1 or 2 at most and is expected sell way over MSRP. Also the news (although not official) seems to be indicating the same.

I'm hearing that's wrong, still saying competition from July and a year later the CS to finish the line

General consensus is that M2 Compeition is NOT limited (only limits it has is due to production capacity at the plant). The CSL was suppose to be limited but now the idea of a CSL is scrapted the CS looks like it will be limited IMO.

The CS will be sold under the same name as 'competition'.

http://www.thedrive.com/sheetmetal/1...ts-report-says

http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/09/29/bm...petition-name/

The production will start in June/July 2018 timeframe and end sometime in 2019. This will also be the last year of M2 series.

Total speculation in both of those articles, the drive says production starting in March 2018 and bmw blog saying 2019.IMO both are wrong and we will still see the M2 Competition start production in July 2018.Then the M2 CS starts production in 2019 and it will be limited. The production timeline for future BMW cars that ynguldyn has been posting on bimmerpost is much more accurate then other websites. The test mule VIN’s that have been posted, also show the M2 Competition model designation.

Again: the M2 Competition (Summer 2018 - 410hp) will not be a limited production car. Production till 2020 will only be restricted by production capacity.

I guess your dealer is referring to the 450hp M2 variant scheduled for 2019.

No one knows for sure! We are all speculating.

Most sources on the internet point to M2 CS (aka Competition) being a limited series. If you think that M2 CS and Competition are different cars, then can BMW churn both of them out at the same time? I don't think the factory as that much capacity.

Anyway, the price of the new M2 CS (aka Competition) is going to be quite high.

http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/09/03/bm...ed-1000-units/

http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/09/29/bm...petition-name/

Does this sound like the M2 CS (aka Competition) that is limited to 1,000 units?

"Over the last few months we went back and forth between the M2 CS and M2 Competition badge, but today, we can say with certainty that BMW will sell the revamped sports coupe under the M2 Competition nameplate."

"Despite seeing several prototypes out for testing, BMW plans to unveil the M2 Competition in late 2018 with a market launch scheduled for early 2019."

"Under the hood it will feature the 3.0-liter S55 petrol engine from the M3/M4 with a maximum power of 405 hp. The engine will be mated to a 7-speed M-DCT transmission or a six-speed manual."

You are aware the N55 M2 ends production in July? Capacity won’t be an issue.

Also you are quoting out of date info. Do you really think individuals in this thread have not seen every speculation article on the upcoming S55 M2? LOL...bmwblog got those vin numbers from this thread.

All the info you need to know is in the last 10+ pages of this thread. Frankly everyone is tired of repeating to new comers who have not been following the details from week to week.

Quite frankly...what a mess!

Wasn't there supposed to be a clear lineage across models advised just very recently.

Base M (of which compiles pack is an option, not a different car)
CS
CSL

Feels like this is all off the cuff now. It not really very fair on potential buyers!

And there lies the main argument that the CSL is still "on" despite recent leaks stating otherwise.

I trust you are well. M2 CS update: we are near the end, we cannot confirm but are confident from meetings and conversations ordering of the BMW M2 CS will start in January 2018. I have your order in hand and will be keeping a weekly look now until January. As soon as BMW choose select customers from the Interest Register which you have logged onto.

If M2 Competition orders start in Jan 2018 and M2 N55 is ending in June '18, then why would anyone want to get the M2 N55 between Jan - June '18? Especially price difference is not going to be that much based on what this forum is pointing to. It looks like there is going to be an overlap between M2 S55 and M2 N55 orders and to me that does not make sense.

It's going to be like the LCI. The last model year ends, they take a break, then when they come back they make the new model that replaces the old model. In this case the Competition.

Relax and wait till BMW announces the M2 Competition price-tag.

Apart from the inevitable price-hike, we can also wonder for example why some people (instead of no-one) prefer discounts over full-price and mark-ups, the wait of several weeks over the wait of many months, the N55 power, dynamics and sound over the ones of the S55, the M240i over the M2, the M3/M4 over the M3/M4 ZCP, the current look over the forthcoming mild facelift, the Mineral Grey body color (leaked VINs show that none of the M2 Competition test mules got the MG body color), etc.

M2 sales exceeded BMW's expectations. This success and the M2 Competition model offer BMW the opportunity to re-position the M2 price on the price-range scale between M240i and M3/M4. And if you tick all options on the options list, you're into M3/M4 territory price-wise.

Should M2 orders stall because customers prefer ordering the more expensive M2 Competition: more production capacity becomes available for manufacturing M2 Competition cars in 2018.

There's a similar discussion going on in this thread:
http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...228342&page=73

It's hard for me to believe that M2 Competition will be a mass production car. It looks like they coming to an end on the M2 with a limited series. I spoke to my dealer today and he said that M2 Comp orders will start in Jan but it is limited in numbers based on all the info he knows, even though it is not official but that is what dealers are hearing from their meetings etc. He told me there's no wait list for it. Now should I believe my dealer who works at BMW or some random dudes on the internet forums??
