When stopped and engine is warmed up...

When you are stopped/ in neutral and the engine is completely warmed up, can you "feel" the engine running somehow inside the cabin? I don't mean engine noise but global car vibration.

I can clearly feel the engine is on through footwell and seat slight vibrations, and it seems there is like a one second cycle when it vibrates slightly more.

Would like to know if you feel the same before going to the dealer. Really don't know if it is normal or not. I thought this engine was super smooth and would be almost impossible to feel it when idling.

Someone on this forum already said it could be the oil hoses but after going around the car "feeling" it, it doesn't seem to be the culprit.

Car is still breaking in (300 miles).

Regards

Well, you have an ICE with reciprocating mass. What do you expect?

The engine is incredibly smooth. But like any other metal box burning exploding dinosaurs, it'll vibrate. You have to be reasonable with your expectations.

Also keep in mind the M2 has much less sound proofing material compared to regular cars.

I guess I would expect it to idle more smoothly...

My diesel 2 liter 4 pot idles with less "vibes".

It could also be some kind of exhaust ressonance or something similar.

I like my performance cars to burp, crack, rumble and shake. It's all part of the fun.

Not complaining...

When accelerating I find the engine a masterpiece.

Many months ago I had an M2 for testing for 3 days, and also a M135i and dont recall this idle vibration. Just wanted to check if it is normal or not.

it is really hard to say whether what you are experiencing is normal or not. It could be the normal vibration you get from "exploding dinosaurs" (as gmzanatta puts it). Or it could be you are feeling something more than normal. Can't tell unless you compare back to back with someone else's M2.

I have to admit that the mild vibration - at idle - from the M2's (6MT) shift knob and pedals caught me off-guard at first. My 2004 4-cylinder Acura TSX, even at 12 years and 130,000 miles, had less vibration at idle. I expected the M2 would be smoother.

But now that the initial surprise has worn off, I couldn't care less. This car is amazing the way it drives, sounds and revs.

I've seen this issue on multiple bimmers. Everything from a 3 series to an X1. If the vibration you are describing gets worse as the car warms up, if you can feel a vibration in the footwell, if it sounds/feels like it's throbbing whomb whomb whomb it's most likely a hose that's pressing up against the chassis somewhere. Typically it's an oil to air or coolant to air heat exchanger hose that's moved out of place. You're not going to be able to feel it under the hood, the engine is going to be too loud and has vibrations of it's own that will drown it out. Maybe if you feel the car underneath the bumper you may feel something, but it's hard to say.

True. This car sounds way more "mechanical" than my m235. The first month I was worried about every little noise.

Footwell and also seat. Definitely worse upon completely warmed up.

Exactly, and I'll bet you can feel it in the steering wheel and armrest. As the hose warms up it moves, sometimes perfectly against the chassis. Other times it may be slightly on the chassis. That's why the vibration varies so much. What you are feeling is the oil or coolant flowing thought the hose, think of the water lines on a washing machine. They move a lot as water is turned on and off, now imagine what's going on as hot oil or coolant is being pumped through the hose. I'm not saying this is 100% conclusive the issue you have, but I'd be willing to bet on it.

Today realized that the vibration is sunstantially reduced when I change to sport or sport+ (always in neutral).
Could it be some kind of exhaust ressonance that is reduced when flaps are open?

Spoke today with the dealer and agreed that they will analyze the thing upon 2000 km service (I spoke about the possibility of being caused by loosen pipes but meanwhile I found this about sport mode making the vinration almost disappear)

Wait... there is a drive setting that isn't Sport or Sport+? I thought the "Comfort" setting was just to let you get yourself settled in and 'comfortable' before you start moving

the difference is that front wheel drive cars have a cable shift linkage which completely isolates the transmission from the gear shift. unlike most front engine, rear drive cars where the gear shift is right above the transmission.

as for feeling engine vibration - it's to be expected in a sports car. I'm sure the motor mounts are a little stiffer than average to prevent excessive drive line flex under load and cornering. however the m2 engine is pretty smooth, so it wouldn't hurt to mention what you're feeling at your break in service

My M235i has similar thing. After a few pulls in Sport+ mode, when car is stopped I can feel the same vibration. There is No problem when I drive It easy or in Comfort mode.
