Completed my 1200 mi service this weekend and noticed today that my gauge cluster was lit up all day today, even with the headlights on Auto and off (it was sunny out)... Anybody else experience the same?

The green headlight symbol also indicates your headlights are on though.

edit: sorry op, just noticed you said what the switch was set to so edited my post. I was over excited at the possibility of a fix.

I noticed this too so i'm confused

OP, do you have pics where it's lit up but doesn't report the headlights are on?

Hmm... I'll have to check tomorrow again. Seems odd that the headlights would be on in broad daylight (no tunnels or pulling out of garages before I took the pic either). Was picking up my kid and I could see the cluster through my sunglasses and thought it was odd.

Also made extra sure my headlights were on Auto...

Clean your windshield, the area where the rear view mirror is.

Clean as a whistle. I'm beginning to lose my excitement, now. Another sunny day tomorrow. I'll make sure I'm behind another vehicle so I can make sure my headlights were in fact on.

I don't know where the light sensor is in this car but in my Lexus it's at the front of the top of the dash near the windscreen. In the past I've thrown a newspaper on the dash and wondered why my GPS/Nav went into night mode. Then the penny dropped. You didn't have anything lying on the dash did you?

I've been working with my dealer a lot on this issue and the theory is, at the moment, is that the light sensor is not sensitive enough.

It's been very grey here in the UK recently and in all this time my M2 does not turn the headlights on when in auto. It basically has to be dark before it turns them on.

When lights are set to manual on it it's night time the gauge cluster lighting is as I'd expect.

My dealer keeps fiddling with the light sensor sensitivity hoping we find a vale I'm happy with.

I am about to hit 1200 miles. I will report back once I have the service done next week.

I noticed this as well. Not sure if its always been like this:

The gauge lights will come on while the rest of the dash (fuel gauge, etc..) are still white. Then at some point everything else turns orange. I feel like I haven't noticed the "vanishing" gauge problem as much since its been doing this.

I'm at 5200 miles.

Also, the biggest problem I see with your pic is you're not in Sport+ mode

That's the reason why I need to check whether my headlights were actually on. I thought ON = Orange everything (in Auto mode), but maybe it's my first BMW and I'm not used to the dash lighting and meaning.

I'm sure it would be exhilarating at 2mph parking in my kid's preschool...

Nothing on my dash, my Audi had the light sensors in the mirror area on the windshield (and one in the mirror facing back) along with the "gel pack" for the rain sensors.

Most BMWs in the last few years are 'Sport' white during the day and 'Classic' orange at night. If you look at your AC controllers they are white in day with the lights off. White in the day with the lights on and orange at night with the lights on. It's the same for the digital part of the gauge cluster.

The gauge needles will only light orange and only be lit when the lights are on

The rain/light sensor is located behind the rearview mirror.

Rain sensor.

The rain sensor and light sensor ensure that you enjoy unimpeded vision at all times, come rain or come shine. The windscreen wiper speed is adjusted and the headlights are activated when required. Located on the inner top edge of the windscreen, the rain sensor is activated using the interval control of the windscreen wiper. Using infrared technology, it recognises drops of water on the windscreen and adjusts the speed of the windscreen wiper to suit the intensity of the rain. In heavier rainfall or when accelerating to pass a long vehicle, for example, the windscreen wipers automatically increase in pace to ensure unimpeded vision. Additional light sensors in the windscreen detect changes in light conditions - e.g. at dusk or when entering a tunnel - and automatically turn on the dipped-beam headlights.

if it were this simple this forum wouldnt be constantly talking about this issue but im curious why not just cover up the light sensor? sounds like the rain sensor would not work any longer but wouldn't the instrumentation lighting stay on all the time as a result?
(i would try myself but away from car atm)

It's even easier than that. You simply put the lights on manually. I have no idea why this is even a thing.

Of course that would resolve it but not everyone wants to drive around with their head lights or parking lights on 24/7. Thats why its a 'thing'.

Personally its not a big deal since i dont DD my car but many do and if i did, im sure it would piss me off...
