Lack of upper door frame on the M2?

Just wanted to rant a bit. What are everyone's thoughts on the lack of a frame on the upper part of the door to support the window?

To me, this (while it may save a bit of weight) always seems cheap. My wife's 2014 Mini Cooper is the same way, and every time I shut the door, I shudder at the thought of what it does to the window motor. Already, BMW is not known for their skill at making window motors/mechanisms. It just seems cheaply made, and it annoys me.

I hate frameless doors but they seem to be the trend for coupes these days. My car lowers the window slightly every time you open the door and raises it back up after the door is shut.. I'd rather just have a door with a frame around it and a nice solid close.

It reeks havoc when it's icy and too cold for the window to go down, whereby opening the door is impossible. Be thankful you're in a warm climate.

Frameless Windows is one of the defining characteristics of a coupe vs a sedan. That's how it should be

It's more expensive the design a frameless window. If you want frames go buy a civic.

Not sure about other manufacturers but all BMW 2 doors are like this and have been. Or more correct so was my 1997 E36M3

No expense was spared on the Neon Frame vs frameless is purely an aesthetic decision by the manufacturer.

Yeah, the cost difference b/w the two must be trivial, at least from an engineering standpoint.

Cheaply? Are you mad? It's more expensive and is considered elegant and luxurious.

Hey, I'm just saying it FEELS cheap when I shut the door. There is a noticeable difference in having an upper frame and not having one. The window rattles around, and I don't get that 'just sucked me into the car' feeling.

Maybe your opinion is that it's more elegant, but I respectfully disagree!

: True story. Apparently Same for the 2005 Subaru Legacy i owned.

Personally It's much more annoying on a four door sedan for me. I just had a habit of using the door frame on a sedan door to close it.

I don't notice the issue on coupes as much.

I thought all coupes were frame less? Every one I have owned has been.

When I got my windows tinted I was told not to roll my windows down for 24 hours. But every time I opened my door my window would roll down an inch or so. Really bugged the crap out of me that first 24 hours. After that I thought it was cool.

I agree, you should have zero rattle. My e46 m3 is 14 years old and shuts solid

lol I love the frameless door look. I'm 100% opposite to you. I find the framed look to be cheap and reflects the sedan which is what I didn't want to buy.

This is exactly why BMW made the M2, with the intent of having framed vs frameless window debates. Rumor is the next M2 will have a cap-less gas tank. Can't wait for the thread on that.

It doesn't bother me. However my car is not driven if there's any sale/snow on the road.

However, not all "coupes" were frameless. My 318TI has frames.

Have you been living in a cave for the last 25 years?

Frameless windows had always been a design feature on a BMW coupe for as long as I can remember. I was driving a E36 318i sedan as my first car and secretly wished than I had the 318is because of the frameless window design.

I find the windows motor mechanism on the 1M miles better than anything I had owned in the past, frame or frameless. The car is now fours years old and the window mechanism is still solid and so far no adjustment is required yet.

I was disappointed a bit to see it does have a cap, My 13 f150 and the wifes explorer both have capless filler necks and its one of those conveniences you get used to.

Also no keypad entry, I hate having to take the fob with me when I run.

Since I got Apple Car Play I was expecting it to open with Touch ID.
