M2 Tires - Change from MPSS to Contis

So a few members have been reporting that their M2's are now coming equipped with Contis instead of the typical MPSS.

I've put together a little poll so we can see and compare.

Seems odd to me given BMW was drumming up the "unique and exclusive" PSS's designed for the M2 during launch, but we do have proof from more than one member.

Good luck. I just took delivery and got contis. They're not too bad but provide good incentive to put some hard track time on them so I can justify replacing them with PSS.

If you are going to put lots of track time in the car I wouldn't replace the continentals with MPSS. The MPSS is a great all around tire but you'd be better off with an RE11 or RE71r if you are looking for a street tire that performs well on the track.

Michelin likely wants to start phasing out the MPSS to make way for the replacement the Pilot Sport 4S.

For those wondering, the Contis fitted on the M2 are ContiSportContact 3's, which are a 10+ year old tire and a complete POS - in my opinion of course.

I had them on my '07 Z4MC (were the OG tires, before I swapped for PSS) and can confidently say that there is no tire out there that belongs more on a flaming pile of garbage than that one.

Phasing them out or not, it's weird they're slapping on a far inferior 10yo tire as a replacement...

There's plenty more rubber out there, even from Conti, that is better than the CSC3.

The version for the M2 is a bit newer, but I see your point. The CSC are up to v5 though, they could've fitted the cars with the newer version if they were forfeiting the PSS.

Looks close to a 50/50 split for the MY17 cars so far, interesting stuff. Thanks to all that have voted up to now.

The RE71 doesn't last long though. RE11 is more durable but not nearly as sticky as RE71, probably a bit stickier than MPSS.

If my car does come with Conti's is there any way to get the dealer to swap them to PSS? I thought I saw someone post in a BMW manual is said PSS was the standard tire, so shouldn't there be a way to get the dealer to swap them?

Doubtful and I don't think the manual says that. The owners manual in the Driver Guide app doesn't anyway. Same deal with tires on the M3, they advertise the PSS for media reviews/press cars but the factory puts on either Conti's or PSS.

If it was a MY16 then you could make the argument - it was advertised as such and the manual does say PSS's.

The MY17 no longer lists the PSS as the only tire, it now says just "performance tires".
