Took Delivery, My Thoughts

After a year of waiting, I took delivery of my M2. I traded in my 2016 M235i.

If you care, here's what I think.
In spite of all of the things I read on line, I still feel as though they under sold this car. While I can't hammer it yet due to the 1200 mile break in, it feels amazing. As compared to my 235, it is a completely different car. I had a JB stage 1 in that car, and can't open up the M2 yet, so I can't comment on outright acceleration comparison. Clutch and shifter are light and feel better than the 235. In fact, they remind me very much of my E60 M5. The 235 while not really jittery at high speeds, wasn't exactly confidence inspiring. Again, like my M5, the M2 feels planted like its on rails. High speed corners in the 235 again while not jittery, made you not totally confident either. It always felt like the tires were trying to bite and the computer was trying to keep traction. The result was something that felt like it was trying to decide to either understeer or oversteer. While it ultimately kept it's line, still made me unsure at times. M2, like the M5, feels predictable and planted.

M235i feels like a normal car that they made fast. M2 feels like a fast car designed to go fast from the start. While the 235 is an excellent car, the M2 is just fantastic. So many aspects of it remind me of the M5.

Exhaust in the M2 is really good, but still too quiet for my taste. I had an MPE on the 235. That was too quiet too

2016 v 2017- Voice controls and connected drive are much better now. Could be my imagination, but doors and trunk feel like they close more solidly.?

Funny part is, my 235 optioned out cost more than my M2. What a deal!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have a 2014 335i 6MT with M performance power kit. I pick up my M2 next week. I can't wait to do my own comparison. I love my 335i (my first BMW), but it's never been as sporty as I would like. Sounds like I'll definitely notice a big difference between the two cars. I also looked at what a new 340i spec'd out to my preference would cost and it was over the M2 price. I love how simple the build options are for the M2! Great value for sure it seems.

I made the jump from a 2013 335i 6MT to the M2. Wait and see, but the difference really is colossal. I can't wipe the stupid grin off my face when I drive the M2, while in the 335 that grin only lasted the first couple of weeks. Really is a great pleasure to drive, hats off to the M division, they knocked this one out of the park!!

Nice comparison! I was planning on test driving the 2 series before taking delivery so I can get a feel of the car to some small extent. Now that you say it's a completely different car I don't know if my test drive is even necessary!

Installed a catless downpipe and removed the resonator / mid pipe on my M235i, sounds fantastic now. I even did a muffler delete for the giggles but it droned too much at highway speeds. Do that to your M2 (minus muffler delete) and it'll sound glorious.

I agree with OP. I came from M235, M2 feels completely different. I tried to option M235 with my M2 options. It is still not the same but costs 5k over my M2. Amazing package.

Thanks for you replies. If you never drove an M2, the 235 would feel like an awesome ride, because it is. But imagine everything good about the 235 and amplify it by 100. Thats the M2. The 235 feels like a car that someone did an awesome job of engine and suspension thing. The M2 feels like a cohesive package that is just transcendent. It's something that numbers can't show, you just have to drive it.
