I don't really care about the mirrors from a "buying it / not buying it" point of view. That would be irrational. But I'm not going to lie - it seems odd, since the 1M had them.
Maybe they knew the number they wanted to hit and they had to cut every non-essential corner to make it happen. If that's the case, well alright. But yeah, it's weird. The other thing is I just don't think I'm in love with the looks of the car. I think the M235i is a more handsome looking car. That's really mind boggling because the 1M made an ugly car good looking. The M2 kinda makes an attractive car less attractive. The front and rear-end kind of make the car look like they took design elements from the X-line.

I'm still waiting for the full reveal to comment on the looks of the M2. But right now to me the 1M had a more wow factor to me... |

I had no idea these existed...hmm. Good info for M235i or if M2. The front end on the M2 disappoints me. |

My buddy just texted me a good theory on the lack of M mirrors - perhaps BMW has more 235 parts laying around than they originally planned to have...might be a plausible reason.

They could have done a better job at designing the mirrors but at least they are color matched to the color of the car and aren't the crappy looking silver M235i mirrors.
The only two features that I would have liked to have seen on the M2 are proper M Seats and a Carbon Fiber Roof.Compared to those features, the mirrors are a very minor thing. |

I have to say I'm slightly dissapointed in this. It has minimal bearing on the performance of the vehicle but it does have a noticeable bearing on it's appearance and I would have liked to have the //M mirrors. Hoping for an easy retrofit with M4 ones

Agreed to some extent but.....its possibly got mirrors from the mainstream F20/21/22/30/31/32 etc F8X mirrors might have been a 'copy' but much more an exclusive copy.

Joke. Here's hoping BMW are reading the disappointment and can quickly retrofit an M mirror before the official reveal. Such a simple feature how could they. Every m3 has had them including 1M no excuse for why M2 shouldn't

That would be good. It would be even better if the only M3 mirror they had laying around was in SO color! SO mirrors on a LBB M2!!!! Yes!!!!

After the initial disappointment about the lack of M3 mirrors, I now think the mirrors BMW chose actually flow with the car nicely. I think it was a bold choice to stick with the regular mirrors but it paid off...imo.

The M5/M6 have had M mirrors for more than 20 years now. See below (standard non-M models above; M models bottom). The M5 has had different side mirrors than the standard 5er since the Model Year 1993 "facelift" of the E34 M5. E39. The trend continued henceforth. E60/E61. F10. The M6 has had different side mirrors than the standard 6er since the E63/E64. F06/F12/F13.

M Mirrors are the unique mirror designs that BMW M uses on many of its M cars. Its designs, shapes, sizes, etc., have varied over the years. Even if some people on this thread assumed otherwise, the fact is that the M5/M6 has had M Mirrors for quite some time now (reference photos above).

Its all to do with the side arm of the M3 and M4 Mirrors not being compatible with the 2er. It was designed to use the M mirrors but a fix added more cost. Besides a mirror is a mirror it still has the same function.

"could have done a better job" is very mild way to put it
i would have found other words when i ordered my 1m i was disappointed it did not come with ///M specific seats... but now this??? for me no ///M mirrors on the m2 says: youre only paying 80K € for a car - you are not worthy of more ///M specific parts - that is an insolence - i wont buy that car and for m3 money i may even consider a cayman gt4 that said the car is sure to be a great, fun car to drive and own - if you dont care about those cost-cut - pay more for less politics

People have a point where they argue that side mirrors are 'just a design detail', no deal breaker. However, it's a hallmark trait for any modern ///M car to sport different side mirrors. With the M2, BMW M broke with this long-standing tradition (and for reasons unrelated to technological progress). FWIW, check the mini-poll: so far, for more than 90% it ain't OK. It's those small sensibilities that should not have been underestimated. It ain't a part somewhere hidden inside or under the car. Alike Joni Mitchell sings in "Big Yellow Taxi": "Don't it always seem to go - That you don't know what you've got - 'Til it's gone". The simple trick of implementing mirror caps (in carbon fiber, if you like, so that the body color doesn't matter) with a shape that distinguishes the M2 from the 'regular' 2er, would have been an easy low-cost solution. All the 2er mirror structure could have perfectly been kept - just a different 'plug & play' ///M mirror cap. If aftermarket folks can do it, then BMW M could do that for sure. BMW should include this in its "To Do" list of forthcoming BMW M Performance Parts.

I am stunned by the level at which such a small detail bothers people. It's not like the mirrors are ugly, it's not like there's any real benefit, and its not like people wouldn't retrofit them to standard 2ers - robbing them of being a unique M2 feature.

You gotta leave something for future upgrades so they can increase the price.

The mirrors on my M3 obviously create an aircurtain down the side of the car, but when the windows are open, they channel too much air into the cabin. The pursuit of better aerodynamics is not always the easist to live with despite how cool they may appear. Food for thought to not miss what the M2 probably doesn't really need.
