Most people don't buy a BMW because it's a good value. It's more about status and showing that you've arrived, as well as being fun to drive and the company culture focused on the driving enthusiast vs. the econobox.

I would never touch a German or any Euro cars brand new, more or less for the reason that OP mentioned. Losing more than 50% of its value after 3-4 years isn't something that economically makes sense to me. Yeah sure I might be a little late to the party, but at least I didn't let 30-35k go down the drain in a matter of 3-4 years.

Pssst.....check out a Stingray or Grand Sport. You can have either brand new for that amount or less. You will not leave the car, you will not give the keys to anybody else.

I think that a very large number of the new BMWs that get driven off the dealer lot are done so under a lease so the "owner" gets the car at an affordable payment. It seems to me that many BMW cars aren't actually owned until they are retuned from lease and sold at a more sensible price.
This is it right here ... while there are some folks who can afford to buy a new BMW the majority are leased.

For those buyers who can afford to a new BMW ... BMW counts on them to purchase/finance them to trade them in on a new model within a year or two (Mercedes and Bentley do the same thing), thus keeping up the "exclusive" imagery of the brand.

I'm sure there's a large amount who use their BMW's as a "work vehicle" so there's the whole tax deductions thing that makes them a bit cheaper to drive when you add that in there too ... or ... they are given an allowance for a "company car" again making them a bit more affordable/good deal regarding monthly payments. Its no secret that "used" cars typically outsell new ones ... that's where BMW's CPO program comes in. People are more than happy to pay a premium for CPO'd cars to have that assurance of a warranty (which any costs: parts and labor that are reimbursed to the dealership ... are able to be written off at BMW's corporate level).

By keeping the MSRP high, not only are those who are leasing new BMW's think they're getting a deal ... so are the CPO buyers. While those who can afford to buy/finance them really don't care that they're losing money on the back end. It's a perpetual cycle. So not only is BMW able to recognise their cars for the NEW cars sales but the USED car sales as well ... while being able to demand top dollar in each category.

Plus BMW's high MSRP's put them in the "exclusive" category ... outside of BMW's drivability ... this is one of the big reasons why people insist on buying BMW's, Mercedes', Acura's and Lexus' with 150k + miles instead of that loaded 6 year old Camry with less than 100k miles.

But things can be worse for new car buyers ... check out the prices of used Bentley's.

BMW's problem is simple. They missed the market. We enthusiasts aren't the market anymore. Look at any Ford, Chevy, Kia, Hyundai, etc. etc. advertisement. You won't see one second of HP/TQ/RPM/cornering G. What you'll see is "comes with Apple CarPlay standard" and the like. Buyers are looking for rolling video games these days. BMW driving dynamics aren't even on most buyers' radar.

I think they're right in moving hard towards the electric market. I'll miss the 'old' BMW but I'd invest my money in the 'new' BMW. In the interim their cars are going to suck and cost more than they're worth; let's hope their brand image carries them through, because I for one would love to see the 2025 iZ7MC.

The Corvette "destroys" the M4 how? I will never in a million years buy a vehicle because it has the best time on the Nurburgring. Or gets the best mileage. Or has the fastest 0-60. I could honestly care less about that. To purchase a vehicle based on stats is downright silly.

Are we forgetting that, in the end, lots of folks buy a car because they like the way it LOOKS? So what is performance-wise, the Corvette is better than the M4? What if I'd never be seen dead in a Corvette? What if I like the way the M4 looks?

Threads like this are useless. What's next? Why live in a $1M in San Francisco if you can live in Sacramento for less in a house that "destroys" your pad in the Bay?

Some of you here forget that BMW's largest market is no longer the EU nor United States. It's CHINA (or it soon will be) and the status of owning a BMW means a lot more than the status of owning a Chevy. No one in China cares how much faster the Corvette C7 (insert trim) is compared to a BMW for a fraction of the cost.

Makes no sense to sell "cheap" or "affordable" or even "reasonably priced" BMWs when their growth market demands expensive cars for expensive reasons. Heck that $70K M4 cost about $250K U.S. equivalent when Chinese government is done collecting taxes and tariffs, so for "us" to complain that your average 3 series cost too much? Well not when they're selling every one built ELSEWHERE and then some at 2-3x the price WE pay for.

At this point, a $30K BMW that might sell well in the EU or US will only be looked down upon in the dominating Chinese market and will sell poorly. The fact that U.S. sales are down double digits every month this year yet BMW Global is breaking sales records left and right should tell you all something.

X2. Take any luxury purchase and try to rate them based on what is important to someone else it pointless.

So as long as the M4 owner isn't spending most of his time on the track (absolutely no one) it suddenly makes sense?

I would love to own a Ferrari that costs 3 times as much and has the same Nurburgring time as a Z06.

I woke up in the morning thinking I was going to buy a Macan, but my wife didn't want us to have 3 porsches and the Macan was too close to the Cayenne. The M4 was my second choice. Sure I could have afforded a corvette or any of those other mentioned cars, but I bought it because I loved the styling and the sakhir orange interior. Its not only about value.

Based on how most new BMWs drive, driving dynamics aren't on BMW's radar anymore, either.

In California, where I live and drive (funny how those two words are pronounced so differently), a new car warranty comes with Lemon Law protection. Not true with a CPO. And the California Lemon Law is perhaps the most protective in the U.S. Important when buying a complicated, expensive car.

We don't really have any lemons laws in Canada AFAIK.

But are CPO cars not like, good used cars checkd by dealer and everything?

For half the price of a BMW, more standad options, and honesty, I feel it drives similar to the F series. Sorry BMW, you are a Euro Lexus in my book.

People who buy BMWs because of how "pure" they drive, or how it's a "drivers" car or however else you want to describe it, are in the absolute minority.

I keep my new car purchases well enough not to want someone's used car. The price is nearly the same as a slightly used 2 year old car by the time I finish bargaining, especially when looking and comparing new vs. used car interest rates. I've purchased or leased several final year new left-overs and have enjoyed them immensely.

Not to worry. If you don't care about what improvements have been made and don't find much against what others picked up for options, buying a used German car is for you. Mercedes used to go to about half its original price after 4 years then stayed there another ten. Its definitely a good option but not for me.
