From what I have read the first M2's were prone to this and the original part number was superseded to an upgraded version that was supposedly meant to eliminate such issues, I guess it's back to the drawing board for BMW. I upgraded mine to Euro taillights, hoping I don't see water on the wrong side of the lens.

My lights are recently replaced. My dealer hosted some engineers from the company who produce the lights. My mechanic tells me it is a large issue across the 2 series platforms.

I used Schmiedmann, they're great. The retrofit isn't difficult. They're almost plug and play, no permanent modifications need to be made,. http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1405431

I just picked up my car and the dealer replaced both and the passenger side new unit it's still showing humidity ... they even showed me the ones they replaced.
Manager mentioned that they will reorder that unit and he hopes the new one it's better sealed . |

What are the chances the dealer would replace faulty pre-LCI tails with LCIs if I requested it? It could be framed up as the LCIs are known to be sealed properly, vs. potentially another bad pre-LCI unit. I've never asked the dealer to do something other than a straight replacement for a warranty item.
Potential hang-ups that I can see would be that the LED lights might be more expensive, plus they'd have to code it after install. |

This is kind of what I figure too, and I certainly wouldn't expect any type of positive response to asking, but it makes me curious. Even if we assume that the LCIs cost the same as the pre-LCIs, so the only difference in cost to do the swap would be the extra labor for coding, it still feels unlikely. I admittedly don't know much about the warranty process and what BMW has to approve vs. the dealer, but this seems like the kind of thing that would count as a "great customer service" type of flexibility. Especially if I covered any extra cost.
I'm sure there are restrictions on what they can/choose to do when it comes to non-standard replacements under warranty, I just wonder where they actually come from. The percentage of customers who are like us and would even think to ask something like this must be vanishingly small, so it's not like they're setting precedent. But then again, I tend to think about things very logically, and logic probably doesn't apply to dealer service departments. |

Maybe the answer is the Euro pre-LCIs with replacement LED bulbs and coding. I'm definitely overthinking this. |
