Talking Join the "always drive DCT manually" Club

Yeah I know the DCT vs manual discussions have raged the forums but I'm just curious how many we are that drive the DCT in flappy paddle mode all the time? I enjoy it tremendously! Full control with snappy exact shifts at any time.

The first half year with the car back in 2016 I tested different modes and drove quite a lot in auto in sport+. But I really don't like that I can't accelerate hard using low end torque. IMHO auto mode works better on track than on the road. When driving really hard the shifts are right where I want them to be. But apart from me testing auto mode early on I'm nowadays always in manual.

I really only have one complaint. When slowing down in third in the city changing manually down to second I sometimes end up in first due to the box switching to second just before I change gears myself. It's hard to notice on low rpms that the box just shifted.

Anyway, love my manual DCT

Anyone else?

Not in an M2, but in my DD GTI with DSG, I drive about 90% in manual mode for 5 years now.

100% of the time

It's amazing how much BMW has evolved this transmission from the previous generation.

Is this thread some kind of pun?

Never new you could drive an automatic as a manual?
You got a third pedal?

Yes my experience mirrors yours 100 percent. Once in a while someone asks about how it performs in auto and I can't really answer because I so rarely let it pick when to shift.

He asked if you manually shift the car but if it makes you feel better then you can go ahead and take a shot at anyone who doesn't have a third pedal not being a real driver blah blah blah. Can't have any discussion about the DCT without someone deciding to join the conversation and be an ***

I drive about 30-40% manually shifting, but in regular traffic when I am not driving aggressively I let the gearbox do the shifting.

I drove an M3 DCT for a 24 hour test drive. It was fun to paddle shift for the first day. The 2nd day, I returned and did not feel the need to paddle shift. Obviously I did not make the purchase.
My mother in law drives a 2017 M2 DCT, I will ask her about her experience.

I prepped a long ISTEP/ILEVEL update review I never posted as I didn't want to revive dying threads. Long story short, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about and after I updated my ISTEP version, this problem has not occurred again. It seems the DCT is holding 3rd/4th all the way down to ~1500rpm, giving me a few more moments now to initiate the downshift before it does it automatically. That means less unintentional 3 to 1 downshifts in traffic for me!
Additional positive changes:
  • Beeping stops as soon as you take car out of reverse!
  • Upshifts appear to initiate more quickly upon paddle press. (I know, I can't measure it. I'm reporting what I feel and think without a way to measure it.)
  • Wandering/long shifts have disappeared when shifting under very light throttle or during very light braking. I could previously induce this by initiating an upshift and suddenly lifting throttle.

I went from NBTevo_J16383I (I-Step F020-16-11-502) to NBTevo_M17345I (I-Step F020-17-11-530), if you are curious.

Oh and the question: I drive the car about 90% of the time in paddle mode. I love downshift/engine deceleration in commute traffic. It is just like my manual cars. I'm usually in auto mode during warmup cruising.

More than likely , she probably didn't threaten divorce over a transmission choice , so check the mirror first ?

It will be interesing to Watch BMW evolve the next one into AT, and we can then see who uses that version of automatic in " manual mode "

I do like how owners refer to it correctly as " manual mode ".

This, except more like 50-50 for me. I bet those of us who commute in the car have a higher percentage of manual mode. I know that on my commute home after a somewhat hectic day I will usually be in auto mode.

if the gas tank on my i8 was bigger, i'd be in sport all the time. the mileage is abysmal in sport/manual, and w/ such a small tank (10 gal), i'd be at the gas station all the time. i'll try it out this week though to see for sure. hahaha. m2 is 6MT
