Motor Trend Car of the Year: Alfa Romeo Giulia

Alfa Romeo taking Car of the Year honors caught me by surprise. The little voice in my head has been telling me to test drive this car for some time now. Hopefully I'll have an opportunity to drive it soon enough. To anyone here that has purchased this car feel free to share long term impressions.

I would only consider the Quadrifoglio, but even then I don't think the car is particularly attractive and I wouldn't enjoy owning it. I'm sure it's a blast to drive, but I'm willing to admit that looks matter to me in this case.

I like the looks, but reliability concerns with so much packed in so little concern me.

This is another thing I have noticed about Motor Trend and that is they don't care much for real life statistics. Regardless that I am a number person, I absolutely despise the fact that they don't count anything but how the car feels.

I never even notice them speak about the absolutely lack of a break feedback from the Giulia when I drove one. Not only did that scare me, it made no sense as the feedback from the gas was good and felt nice.

Thankfully, most car reviewers like Motor Trend, C&D or even R&T doesn't make the car sell. (For example, see the Caddy CTS-V). In October... Alfa Romeo sold only 726 of these cars in the US, down from 900 give or take in September

I would only lease this car. The Giulia forums (that I have quietly peeked continuously) are usually filled with problems. That is not a car I would want to keep. So screw you Motor Trend. Seriously. I'm waiting until Motor Trend stops fanboying over Alfa Romeo.

Edit: I am not 100% certain on the figures.

These guys score your car based on how much dough you give them.

I read Euro Car Mags when I want the unfiltered real info.

They named the PT Cruiser COTY back in the day. This award has very little validity.

Motor Trend is good for Randy's on-track expertise. Otherwise, Jalopnik has more credibility.

Not too surprising, it is a great car and was an incredible effort from Alfa after a long hiatus with 4 door sports sedans. I briefly toyed with the idea of getting one but expected tanking of resale values, and reliability concerns set me straight. I still haven’t seen a quad in the flesh yet!!

Yeah, I haven't seen one rolling around these parts either. Guess that's one thing that makes it somewhat attractive. But, have come across one at a dealership up in Charlotte.

What did you think of it? I’ve heard it actually looks even better in the flesh vs pics.

Actually looked really good. Love the front end. Has a certain look to it. But again, it's not for everyone, and I much rather prefer my ///M3.

One of my best friends is the MD of the local Alfa dealership here and his daily is the Quadrifoglio. Certainly a beautiful vehicle. I'm luck to have one on standby if I ever want it for the weekend or so.

That being said, does anyone actually take Motor Trend seriously? Does anyone read an article like that and say "cool, I guess I'll go buy one..."?

The voters won't have to drive one very often. If they did have to do so, no Italian car would make the first cut.

Point taken. I didn't realize the criteria for which the vehicle is rated is that subjective.

I've seen a few in person. I like the front, but rear looks like a boring Lexus.

Not enough car for the $ IMO
