2018 M2 Valentine 1 Laser Detection Issue
I just picked up a 2018 M2 (traded in a 2017 M4 ZCP). I transferred my Valentine 1 to the new car, and the laser warning went off continuously. It didn't do that in my M4. We also have a 2017 M240i, and the detector works fine in that car.
It appears that there is something about the 2018 M2 windshield that is setting off the V1 laser detection. I had to turn laser detection off. Has anyone else had that problem? (I have ALP laser jammers, but they haven't been installed yet.) EDIT: Oops. I didn't search very well. Just found this thread: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1423358 Last edited by dmwood; 01-22-2018 at 08:14 AM.. Reason: User error |

Not sure it's the driver assistance systems. I was getting laser detection with nothing turned on in the car and the ignition off. (I had the V1 plugged into our 2017 M240 --which doesn't have this problem-- and ran a long cord into the M2).
Laser detection went off whenever the V1 was pointed at the windshield. If I pointed the detector at the side windows or the rear window, it didn't go off. That leads me to suspect there may be some coating on the windshield that's setting the V1 off. Not a big deal for me, because I use laser jammers. As others have pointed out, if a cop targets you with laser directly, all the V1 will do is tell you you're about to get a ticket. (It will sometimes pick up scatter if a nearby car is targeted, though.) I'm just curious to find out what's new that's causing the laser detection. |

I have had V1s pretty much since they came out. When they were first released, they were far and away the best detector on the market. The range was the best, and no one else had the arrows, which I think I would have a tough time living without. Ka radar behind? Speed up! Ka in front? Slow down! Out of the box, they are very noisy. But once you get them set up and customized, the number of false alerts is reduced dramatically. The new K Junk fighter feature does a pretty good job at blocking out all of the blind spot detection systems etc. that are on the road today. And the iPhone app V1 Driver gives you even more control, include GPS lockouts and additional muting. The way V1 Driver implements automatic GPS lockouts is clever. You have to pass the same signal at the same location several times before it will lock out a signal. (The app developer is also great to deal with). Time has moved on though, and the V1 no longer leads the pack. The patent on the arrows has expired, which explains why Escort now has them. The Uniden R3 gets great reviews, and is a bargain (but no arrow). Radenso also makes some great detectors, and I am very tempted by the new Radenso RC-M, which integrates with the ALP laser jammers, but is pretty pricey (and there are no reviews yet). I don't mind farting around customizing the V1 and dealing with a separate app. Not every one (including my spousal unit) is, though. The V1 is still a great detector once it is set up and customized, and I have grown used to the way it displays and prioritizes threat, but I don't recommend it to friends anymore without a lot of qualifications and caveats. |

I posted the below in a similar thread. Improved my V1 performance quite a bit:
Here are the settings I use on my V1. Definitely reduced the falses and increased Ka performance: https://www.vortexradar.com/2016/02/...or-the-iphone/ I also set a max out of the box K band frequency of 24.195. This mutes the radar cruise control systems on new cars, especially Acura’s. I’ve only passed one cop that was running K band that high that the V1 muted. Still had plenty of time to slow down tho, as radar cruise K band usually only gives a couple lights, while radar cop signals are much stronger. |

My last one was stolen about 5-6 years ago and to be honest I haven't missed it very much. I began driving an American stealthmobile ( AKA SUV) as a daily driver. I've met Valentine and he is a great guy. He shows up at Mid Ohio BMW CCA Hpde events occasionally. Escort was always a great product but the arrows were a must. I did notice the arrows on the passport now, and that really levels the playing field. |

Yeah. In the city, police radar is the exception. But on the highway it's the reverse. I go up to the mountains pretty much every weekend, and the RCMP and the Sheriffs use Ka band radar. There are a few spots between Calgary and Lake Louise where they sometimes use laser, but laser is always stationary, and I don't think the cops like having to flag cars down on the highway (I don't blame them). They'd rather pull you over with their car. I have a three head ALP setup (front only). Calgary doesn't use Dragon Eye yet, so I don't bother with the rear heads. I am tempted by a remote radar detector installation, though. It can be hard to talk your way out of a ticket when the cop sees that you've got a radar detector. Both Radenso and Netradar make a radar detector that integrates with ALP. Netradar is about $1000 cheaper for front and rear, but really needs a smartphone to act as the head unit (otherwise you just get voice alerts). I don't want to have to have my phone out and open the app every time I drive the car. Radenso has its own display. Maybe if I'm a good boy I'll get one for my birthday. |
