Your M2..how statistically rare is it in the M2 World
So you own your dream car, and believe me it is one of the all time great cars ever made regardless of the bargain Sticker price BMW is charging for 2016/2017 models. What are the odds of meeting the EXACT same build and color in our BMW M2 World on a nice sunny day. If we assume in 2016/2017 that the build was a total of 4000 cars.
I have yet to see one on the road here in Encinitas, Calif but they are out there...somewhere in the twilight zone of great car heaven. THE SAME COLOR White is the standard color and hence is $700 cheaper than LBB, Black and Grey hence based upon current dealer availability WHITE 49.5 % LBB 31.5% Grey 15.5 % Black 14.5% Approximate USA distribution, not exact by any means. So if you are driving your odds are about 50% the M2 you will see will be white and 80% white or blue THE TRANSMISSION The extras cost of the DCT is close to 3K, hence a number of owners will opt out for monetary reasons, some others for preference. DCT 60% MT 40% This could be a bit low, custom builds probably prefer the Manuel OPTIONS: not counting computer updates or apple, the EXEC package costs $1400 on the 2017 up from $1250..still some owners want the car pure....most models due come with it on the dealer floor. Exec Package 90% Standard 10% That might be a bit high for the package but, it is true rare car that does not have it. BMW has created very unique situation in limiting the colors/options. The most common M2 will be white with DCT and Exec package. The rarest of the rare ( and this car is rare in any color or shape) would be a Mineral Grey stick with Manuel and no exec package...a super rare/same with black. Getting back to my point the odds of you meeting you exact same build and color are super easy to figure out.. My odds were as follows: I own the LBB hence 31.5% of 4000 cars made for 2016/2017. That knocks it down to 1240/4000. My transmission is DCT Hence 60% of the 1240 remaining number leaves 744 M2's I have the exec package hence it leaves approx 670 cars worldwide..... The final statistic is unknown to me....that is what county are you in..lets take the USA and say 2500 cars for the two years and you can go from there. The point of this is thank BMW for making a truly great and rare car...I look forward someday to find my doppelgänger...here is an idea as to how possible that really is..good luck and enjoy driving.. |

OP thanks for that nice summary! I'm a 2017 LBB 6 Speed Executive Package.
I do believe its very difficult to see them, but they are out there. I'm heading to a Cars and Coffee at the end of this month, hoping to at least see another M2 out there. There are a couple in FL just not in the area I'm in!

I have '17 LBB 6MT executive pack. When I went into the dealership last week for my 1200 mile service, you would have thought I brought a unicorn in for show and tell. For 2 hours straight there was a crowd surrounding my car. The owner of the dealership even came out and said hi to me.

I have the LBB 6MT with GCC package, which I think is pretty much the exec package. I know in Kuwait the allocation is 1-2 per month, there are less than 10 that have arrived, most in white and DCT. Only 2 are 6MT, mine and another in white.

I have a black one, no Exec Package but... DCT. Still, pretty rare.

Rare is determined by the # of cars produced, and maybe the MT take rate. The M2 is not a rare car, but maybe rare comparatively to other modern BMW production #s.

In this instance demand coupled with a bone bare sticker price makes the care rare in terms of a production car. I hope BMW can keep away from the temptation of making this another 100k out the door with tax/ license and warranties.. With butt warmers.. BMW don't mess this winner.

For example, stats may show that 31.5% of M2s are LBB, and 60% of M2s have DCT. But this does not necessarily imply that 60% of LBB M2s have DCT. For all we know, buyers who prefer LBB may disproportionately prefer 6MT (e.g., 80% versus 20%). Likewise, AW buyers might have gone for the Exec Package at a lower rate than buyers of other colors. Still, even with those caveats, a fun exercise! Thanks and regards. -scr |
