M2 mini review and track experience.
Six months has got to be the longest I have ever waited for a car. I was more excited to track the car than to drive it to be frank. It arrived just in time to break in the engine. I was actually short 200 kilometers but the dealer was cool about that and did the first service anyway.
I daily'd the car to work, took out the family, went to different events and cruised around a lot. It works in every situation. I found the hidden exhaust mode especially fun. The "crooked" seat did not bother me, even though these kind of things usually tick me off. The clutch could be a little shorter but I'm used to it now. The air conditioning is quite good considering the interior is black (I'm from Kuwait). To me, this is like a mix of two of my favorite cars which I have owned before but never fully satisfied with both, the F10 M5 and a Toyota 86. I enrolled in the first open track in this season at the Bahrain International Circuit, on the full GP track that is used for Formula 1. It was a blast! The car was amazing, really fun and easy to drive. I managed to beat my best time from last year on an automatic Stingray. I'm not a professional race driver, far from it but to compete with my previous number with a car that is 100 horsepower less and manual was impressive for the M2. The open track was 6 sessions of 30 minutes each and I barely missed 10 minutes total. In a couple of sessions I got carried away and had to leave before cooling down. Compared to my C7 where I need to cool down and leave the track every 2-3 laps, this was far more fun! Not that there was anything wrong with the C7, it's just that it was really hot at 30+ degrees centigrade. I did approximately 40 laps in one day and went to work with the car the next morning. Amazing quality and durability, hats off to BMW and the M engineers. Well, the breaks are now squeaking but that would probably be my fault for not cooling down. My best time was 2:35 and I also made it on the Instagram page of the Bahrain International Circuit. Here's a video, please excuse the quality as the only way I figured out to import them from my GoPro was to move to my macbook then send them via messages which crops the hell out of them. Any other way and it treats it as a movie and I can't upload to youtube. One last thing, while I drove the car like I stole it, this was not a competition, no timing and we had to follow a lot of rules. Plus this is my 3rd time on track and I have a lot to learn. Looking mostly for words of advice and hints on how to become better. Edit: updated with HD video now Last edited by MYK; 10-17-2016 at 11:25 AM.. |

Great! The long clutch travel is the only thing that worries me... I found it the only downside on the 6MT when test driving the M2...

Looks like huge fun!
That red Porsche you passed is a 991 GT3 RS, by the way.

Thanks! Haha yeah there were a couple and a couple of McLarens too. The GT3 RS was probably on a cool down lap or he wasn't trying hard. The GTI at the end was a surprise. I get better times, passed him in a straight line but in the twisties I had trouble passing/keeping up. Very impressive. He could just be a better driver though. |

You'll get used to it. Just don't focus on it.
