Just picked up my M2 on ED...Odd whining noise when slowing down

I just picked up my M2 at BMW Welt doing European Delivery for the first time. It was an incredible experience! Something I've definitely wanted to do for a long time.

Long story short when driving the car around Munich, there is a whining sound that is loud and quite annoying coming from the rear. It becomes noticeable at low speeds when slowing down and then stops upon the car stopping completely.

Any idea if this is common with the M2? Haven't experienced anything like it in any other car....

Does it sound like this: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...5#post20402775

If so it could be the diff that BMW have been recalling.

Probably the rear diff that is under recall.

I think it is a different sound. It is less metallic and more like a whinny jet engine slowing down type of noise. My first thought was something related to the diff though.

I drove it a bit harder tonight and the noise would come and go with no rhyme or reason.

Is it only when braking? Mine made a very noticable noise for the first few 100kms, i believe it is to do with the brakes bedding in, but it will go away if so.

If not it could be the diff, i also do get a less noticable whining nose when traveling at low speeds but i also get the mattalic clang associated with a dodgy diff.

I'll have to pay attention to using the brakes tomorrow. I'll be driving to Austria, so I'll have a better idea of the conditions. I want to say it isn't tied to braking, but I'm not positive.

Sounds like you're experiencing all kinds of fun noises

Haha yes, but I'm used to all the strange noises now lol,

Thankfully none of them take away from the amazing driving experience.

Probably the disc brakes. It went down after 100km on mine.

Are you sure it's not the turbo? My turbo makes apparent noises when I slow down if I don't have the music on.

Any update on the noise? Just picked up mine yesterday and had a similar noise. Pretty sure it is brake related and after 150KM has gone away.

I hear what sounds like a turbo related noise when slowing. Think it's normal though...

I just did ED this past week and noticed the same sound. Sounds very much like an electric motor coming to a stop. It's the machining grooves on the brake rotors. As you wear them off the sound is reduced. That's been my experience so far.

I just delivered an m2 to a customer yesterday and when I drove it to the gas station I heard the whining noise when slowing down. I believe it has to be the diff cause it would still make the noise if I let off the brakes. Gonna talk with our head tech to see if he knows what it is.

TucErDoc MT. Tech said it is the diff. They have a completely different fluid in them designed to help the break in process. then at 1200 miles you come in and they change it out for the regular fluids. that's for both transmissions.

It is not the diff. It is the cross hatch pattern on the brake rotors. Takes about 300 to 800 miles to go away depending on how hard you brake.

David1 so that's why it made the noise when I let off the brakes? and if it was the brakes, you would hear it from the front of the car where the majority of the braking happens. the noise only comes from the rear.

I have a slight motor whine sound when I come to a stop. You can't hear if over the radio.

I have a DCT, MY2017, I still haven't had my 1200 service, but I never heard this type of sound in my 2011 DCT M3.

I'm not sure its anything to worry about - yet.

It could be the Turbo spooling down, or the diff. I'll pay attention after the 1200 mile service is done.

az1M - is that your LBB M2 at the North Scottsdale dealership right now?

Good to see another Scottsdale M2, I'll be getting mine in a couple of weeks.

This is the sound a new differential makes and is 100% normal. The whiney, jet engine winding down noise is present on every new M2/M3/M4. Mine did it just like everyone else's. Goes away after a few hundred miles.

Enjoy it while it lasts. I thought it was kind of neat!
