Rear Spring Failure - 2016 M2 OG
So this was fun. 2016 M2 DCt with 40500 miles, just plain old commuting back into Edinburgh and I hear a twang. No other sounds so carried on at about 70mph on an A-road for about 15mins.
Thought I'd run over a plastic bottle or something, but when I got out the car having parked up and saw drivers rear looked somewhat tucked. I'm running standard suspension, so this caught my eye. Turns out the coil snapped clean through. Didn't hit a pothole or anything, but has anyone else had a coil failure? Probably, I'd guess.... Fix was straight forward, ordered a pair of rear springs and digested YouTube instructions. Took about 1.5hrs in my single garage with most of the time getting the nuts undone. Made sure to double mark the camber bolt too.

Shock appears none the worse for wear. No visible leakage, nothing bent. I checked it visibly when I swapped in the new spring.
I only travelled about 3miles on a main road before I had chance to sport the defect. After that, it was sub 10mph to limp home and no sudden bumps or divots. Thankfully I knew the local roads. Car sits even now on both sides, and I can't feel any difference driving now. Maybe I'm just lucky.

This is FAR too common on these cars. BMW should really step up on these because it's a safety issue.
It does look like a ton of corrosion. I wonder if stones are breaking through the coating and then it corrodes? |

We do have pretty poor road-saly conditions here in the UK.
My car is however Irish in origin. Who knows.

Never know what those dodgy Irish are up to . I think it's just unfortunately very common and sad that it happens on a car like this so soon. I have a 13 year old Mazda and the springs are probably the only parts that haven't rusted.

Springs breaking on a BMW is a tale as old as time, almost as common as a faulty coolant reservoir tank. I broke a spring on my old 2000 323i and had no idea until I was under the car for something unrelated.

I had the same thing happen to my e46 M3 daily driver when I lived in Boston. It too was VERY rusty. Turner Motorsports fixed it and they told me they had seen this from time to time.
Good advice to monitor rusty suspension components.

Same issue as E46 but different
Just posted this reply to another thread
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...3#post30968083 The 2003 E46 M3 I bought new had two replacement springs in the time I owned it (4.5 years), but they broke due to the pigs tail design being weak at that point. I'm planning to kick up a fuss with BMW UK regarding this now as it is a genuine safety issue and I'm very far from happy with the conversation I had with their customer service today. Car is less than 3.5 years old and 22k miles. Totally unacceptable in my view. Springs really should last the lifetime of the car imho. DC |
