The concept of present and future classics

For stimulating debate, three questions:

1) What cars do you consider a present or future classic?
2) What characteristics do those cars have that other cars don’t?
3) Do you notice any common trends?

Bonus: when does the possibility of increasing value begin to affect the price?

Bonus bonus: whats your future classic prediction?

Feminine and masculine lines concurrently to the car.

A quirk or quirks in regard to a technology item/drivetrain/chassis compared to regular cars in segment.

Held in wide esteem by car collectors and possibly the wider population, Audi r8 a good example.

Future prediction, my car and your car will become future classics, no one else's

Every M3 up to the F80. The OG M2. SLK55 AMG.

Any car generally with a big capacity engine.

Really struggling to think of any other cars with the wow factor for me.

May be sacrilegious, but i think the g-series m440i may be just as collectible as the m3. Same with the e90 gen 335i.

By the time anything newer becomes a collectible I won’t be able to drive or be dead. But the Biden administration can erase all car culture before that.

I will be in driverless Ubers at that point. Sad but reality. I will be blind by the time I hit 70 unfortunately. Keep the green party at bay and you won’t have to worry about EVs.

Im thinking a future classic should either stand out in its segment, or be the standard of it. Something like an m5; it created the whole high performance luxury class nearly singlehandedly.

Impressive. Agree on the vette, the bmws, and 350z (not the 370) for sure. Aston is niche in the US, although secretly we should love touring cars more. M2, well of course

My mclaren 675lt will be a future classic
Limited production and the best produced mclaren.
My g82 BMW not a future classic
I have another classic that is already in that category of classic

Single year production
500 coupes
500 roadsters
Each one built with attention to detail
The bench mark to all future McLarens
It does everything right: track day, road use

the 675lt has 87% different parts than its predecessor the 650. the 650 was the evolution from the 12c. the 12c is a fantastic machine, the first road going car since the f1. It's also a limited production, but not as limited as the 675. the 12c was produced for several years as well. the 675lt uses a lot of titanium and carbon. And when you get behind the wheel, you just feel like something special is going to happen. that intrinsic feeling that keep you coming back and never getting bored.
Even today, with the many iterations of the Mclaren, more modern, newer, more horsepower, the comparison goes back to the 675. how is the 720s? the 750? Journalists go back to the 675lt as the benchmark.

I MIGHT be biased, but Audi RS4 is potentially looking to be one of these "future classics"
If holding value or rarity means anything.
I was recently offered 52k for my '07.
@1300 made it to the states
Doesn't hurt that it is n/a, 6spd, 4.2 fsi V8
And besides being heavy in the nose, is fun to drive!!

NA engine
low production
manual, dct/smg acceptable if no manual. zf8 is a no

e92 m3, 458 italia, manual f430 and gallardo, aston martin dbs (db9 gen), lc500, m2cs, pretty much any gt3 or 911 turbo, targa, sport classic, s/t, gt2, T. special edition mclarens and ferraris prior to hybridization. c63 with the 6.2 v8. boxsters/caymans with the 4.0 (gts, gt4, spyder, gt4rs).

i've heard people saying they think their G8x M car will be money in the future but i dont think so. toyota gr86 looks like it should but there are too many built and its cheap, its going to become the next 240sx but it will take a looong time.

OG M2 and comp will follow CS prices and maintain a percentage of that.
