According to BMW’s design boss Domagoj Dukec, some BMW customers actual prefer more unusual, polarizing designs over more traditional, harmonious designs. Which is why BMW’s design language does both. "... these customers are different – they want a more irrational car, and they’re willing to pay more for that emotional expression, and to really make a statement." Dukec told Car Magazine. From https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/04/21/s...ns-polarizing/ (interview excerpts printed everywhere). If you visit the G87 board, you will find many (most?) owners prefer the G87 design ("muscular") over the F87 ("feminine"). |

Saw my first new M2 this weekend at the dealership. Its white. The rear is the worst design I have ever seen. The side view is ok. Front is goofy and unfinished looking. I wanted to like it. I just cannot.

My car was in for a service today. They had a new black M2 with all the MPerformance parts on. Looks a lot better in person than in the photos but it’s a pass from me.

Black just hides all the ugly lines and unfinished panels...check out the car in any other color in person...it doesn't look better in person

So I did a cleaning session on my GC8 WRX yesterday and went for a drive.
That car is 1240kg (2728lbs). That made me think. My M2CS is roughly 310kg (680lbs) heavier. My Aston is roughly 340kg (748lbs) heavier. The G87 is roughly 490kg (1078lbs) heavier. Of course the WRX would not see where any of these cars went if you wanted to race. However. I’m so used to the faster cars that it felt like I was breaking every rule in the book just by driving at the speed limit. It was so much fun. This presents a paradox to the person that gets joy from driving. Cars are getting easier and easier to drive faster and faster. To get any reward you have to break laws. There is still joy in my fast cars at sensible speeds though. You feel stuff. Bumps, vibrations, feedback. You simply don’t get that in the G series. They feel like a mind controlled hovercraft. Progress? Requisite photo. |

First, great review!
It's 2023, and I just bought a 2016 OG M2 in Long Beach Blue 6-spd. What a stunner in every way! (I used to own 2 E46 M3 convertibles). G87 is simply Fugly! Sure, people's eyes will eventually adjust to and accept its half-baked design with square edged (lack of) styling akin to Chrysler/Dodge designs of yesteryears (i.e., K car). They need to fire all the current designers (or marketing department that's controlling the design dept.)! **G87 should be compared to the latest Honda Civic Type R to showcase just how lacking G87 is, design-wise** Last edited by SDKIMLAW; 08-11-2023 at 08:23 AM.. |

Unfortunately w/few exceptions (like my G06 but not the LCI), I have written off most of the G series based purely on aesthetics alone. Though unlike the Bangle era, I won't bother w/MB AMG again.
So just when, I started to like the huge screen are you telling me that it contains the ONLY controls for things like A/C! Hell how do we reboot it? I've had to reboot my current system more than once. |

I really wanna like the G87... Maybe in a few years (and an LCI) I'll get it and swear up and down that the H87 is ugly and an inferior M car.
But for now I'm gonna enjoy my F87 |

I think a lot of people that are saying they don't love it now will be buying one in a few years. I think its hard to go for a drive around the block and know what this car is all about, sorry. Yes you can say the first impression is everything but to me that is not where the story ends. As far as looks thats different.
But looking at stuff online, PHD racing for example and even Chris Harris is loving this car. I have driver a g80 and I really enjoyed it, I did prefer my m2 comp at the end of the day because it was more fun but apart from the looks I could take the g8x. The seating position the g8x is super good so there is some things it has going for. I personally won't be buying one but as easy as it is to just hate on it I have decided I am not going to do that, I see the potential and I also know some people that are psyched on it and it is true it does not look bad in person. Also the non M2 2 series is a much better looking car, actually kinda like it now. I wish they had just taken that car and made it more agressive, I think they woulda have a big winner there |

Naw, the G cars aren't going to grow on me...and unless they completely redesign them for the LCI, I don't see myself EVER owning one - BMW dropped the ball on the designs here

Like the G80/G82, I do think the G87 looks decent in dark colors as it helps hide a lot of the ugly design elements. Still, I can't see myself spending all that money to buy a car where I have to trick myself into thinking it looks good, especially when the F87 exists and just looks effortlessly stunning.

I was going to order a 6MT G87 until I rented it. It took me less than 2 minutes on the OG F87 test drive after that to know it was the one.
If you love the F87, G87 isn't going to do it for you. It is quite a different feel, but all around it is a great car. I own a G20 330i and love it. I think the G87 would be terrific with the auto, but the whole purpose of my purchase was to go back to a manual DD. |

I'm with you here. First test drive I was immediately in love. Cant say the same about the G87, at least for me. I'm sure its the right car for a lot of people but it just aint it for me.

G87 front bumper literally looks like it's missing pieces of trim or mesh. Horrendous. Rear is also tragic looking imo. I do agree the flares and profile are nice and wonder if someone in the aftermarket will come out with redesigned front and rear bumper treatments. I don't love the head and tail light designs either, but the bumpers are the real eye sore to me.

I have a white 2007 M2, which followed my 2000 M Coupe, 1995 M3 and 1990 M3. I love the flowing side profile of my M2. It's plenty fast enough for me, and cost me $58,000 out the door. The new M2 would be $70,000. For that money, I'd get an M3 or maybe move to a Cayman. Looks like this will be my last BMW. I started with 2002's back in the '70's. Great cars, all of them...sad to see them get so ugly, heavy, no full size spares, bla bla bla.
