I own an OG M2 and yesterday I drove a G87 M2.

Yesterday I drove a blue 2023 M2 that was at the local dealer.

- It looks better in person than in pictures. This is obviously subjective, but in my opinion, the F87 still looks better by a long shot. The G87 is definitely ugly, but in person the G87 is.... acceptable? If you got the new M2 in black I think it would sufficiently hide the ugly parts and you might have a decently attractive car on your hands.

-It sounds great, the S58 sounds better than the S55 in my opinion but still worse than the N55. Disclaimer: I've only heard a handful of S55s in person. The S58 burbles discretely and makes some wonderful growls on the power.

- The manual gearbox feels really similar to my OG. Not much of a change here. I noticed the pedals were in slightly different positions, or maybe the seating was at a slightly different position relative to the pedals.

-The first thing that I noticed is how big, heavy, and numb the car felt. You dont feel every bump in the road like you do in the OG. The steering feels super light in the G87 compared to my F87. Basically the G87 felt like I was driving a 4 or 5-series in comparison to my OG M2.

-The seats in the G87 are amazing. No competition here.

-The full screen dashboard is extremely cringe. The salesman had to navigate through a couple menus just to turn on the A/C. Thanks, but ill keep my physical buttons.

-The power is obviously amazing in the G87. This car only had 2000 miles on it and I didnt want to abuse it so i never really went super hard but i did do 1 full throttle 2nd gear pull and it felt nice.

At the end of the day, I prefer my OG M2. It feels much more like an overpowered go-kart than the G87 which is exactly, precisely why I bought this car in the first place. You feel every bump in the road, you hear everything the car is doing. The steering is heavy and communicates with you. Its such an irreplaceable experience. The G87 felt like they took that same experience, gave it more power and comfort, made it look worse, and then turned everything else down from a 10 to about a 7. Shame.

I thought I was going to fall in love with the G87, but instead the exact opposite happened.

I haven't driven one, and honestly don't plan to, but my thing is aesthetics, and the G will just never compete there.

Thanks for your review, much appreciated.

While I haven’t driven it yet I have seen a local fellow members Black G87 and it’s striking in person

It’s lowered now, and it looks absolutely Bitchin dropped properly

I think the color choices offered on that car are far from the greatest

Black Sapphire Metallic , Toronto Red, and Brooklyn Grey are the best of the color offerings IMO

You can pick your favorite from the bunch… I will go with BSM

The new G87 is a powerhouse and it’s a very capable street car no doubt about it

The car hasn’t been out long enough to understand it’s fun potential,

Like everything, it takes a little time

I drove a G87 and then this past week a broken in G80, the first thing I'd ask though is if you went through M modes. In standard driving the G8X do feel quite numb but when you adjust the modes the car becomes pretty beastly and it does hide it's weight very well. I also agree they look better in person for sure but overall they are still not a good looking car to me, some angles, sure, but not the whole car. Also echo thoughts on the dashboard for a sports oriented car.

I’m seeing G87s on the road now. They look pretty good. I even saw a my little pony blue one. And. Slap me down. It looked good. Really good.

But here’s the thing.

Would you choose to have a two inch length increase at the price of having to wear two condoms every time you needed to use it? Or would you stay as you are with the lesser equipment but greater feel.

That’s the question.

It also explains the G87 forum.

No amount of hand waving is going to get me to start saying: "its growing on me"

Its just too ugly and it looks seriously uncomplete - like they never finished the design. The weight alone also means I don't even care to drive it

Thanks for this review. But regardless of how it drives, I don't think I can get over the looks, even in black. Sure, it's an M2 so it has a certain cool factor automatically, and yes at certain angles it has a badass stance. But to trade in my M2C for one? No way. Never.

So many guys say the G87 "looks better in person than in photos." But when is that not the case, for anything really? 3D will always beat 2D.

I'm convinced the F87 will forever be considered the last classic M2.

Youre right. I would say the exact same thing about the F87.

F87 looks great in pics dont get me wrong, but its absolutely breathtaking in person.

The G87 doesnt have the same awe-effect in person, at least not in my opinion.

My theory is that the f87 is actually a 2nd gen 1m; with the g87 being the first “real” m2. I say this bc the f87 feels so much more akin to the 1m than to the g87.

But why would they make the "first real M2" so ugly?

The G87 has that problem doesn't it. It's the kind of car you would turn around and look back at and go, "Urgh... that's not exactly what I remember".

The F87 on the other hand? Hubba Hubba!

No wonder black will most likely be the No1 color because it can hide most of the ugliness!

I've seen them in many colors and the black looks the best.

When seeing it next to mine what really stood out was the larger dimensions.

You're talking about presence, and it's something that's impossible to capture in pictures (by definition). Size also creates presence. In fact, it's one of the easiest ways to create it, which is why all BMW's get bigger and bigger every year. The G-Series is no exception. But presence isn't everything, clearly.

I just made a post questioning what it is that's so endearing about the F87. Your statement there I think comes close to answering that question.

I really wish BMW hadn't messed with the formula though.
From the G87 forums, it seems that car's buyers think F87 owners rail on the new car just to justify their own car, and I don't understand how they fail to understand that most of us were just wishing it'll be a car in the mould of what we knew and loved, just made better in every way - so we could upgrade to the new, last M2, and keep it forever.
Instead BMW releases something completely out of left field.
I guess they know there's a customer base out there for what this new M2 is and its probably not the same crowd that bought the F87.
Maybe the F87 is the final love letter to BMW lovers of old, and the G87 is the welcome letter to tomorrows' generation of BMW buyers who will invariably have to deal with heavier, number, electric cars with virtual reality driving experiences and widescreen tv sets for dashboard screens.

You, and the vast majority of M2 owners.

The confirmation bias is stronger in the G forums than anywhere else on this board by a factor of 10. The F series guys don't have to justify their purchase of one of the most beloved cars BMW has ever made. Quite the contrary.

Exactly right. With the exception of a few that wanted the M2 CS to be the be-all-end-all (a sort of USA version of the E46 CSL).

I don't think they know their customer base at all, evidence is in the departure from an obviously winning formula. I don't think BMW cares...yet.

Once again you've hit the nail right on the head. The G87 is the M2's bad haircut phase. It was short and tight, clean and beautiful with the F87, but the G Series suffers from so many not-quite-there-yet issues that it's not even a consideration for many M2 owners (including myself).

I hope they get their sh!t straightened out with the next go-round, but no 6MT = no care for me.

I just don't understand how they let this design get out of the design room...perhaps it was European safety restrictions or something but I can't imagine everyone in the room was like: "We've done it, this is the best looking car we've ever produced - it will stand the test of time and won't have to grow on anyone. This will sell-out instantly just by looks alone"

The car doesn't look finished...it looks half designed. Maybe they ran out of design time and they were forced to settle on something half-baked - I really wish we knew.

The car is classically unattractive from every single angle - I honestly don't know how that happened to a modern BMW

I don’t know but the regular 2 series looks unappealing also.
