2017 og cluster

Looking to get more consensus from 17 ‘ owners but do you have any issues with the glare? can owners list their production date?

Apparently there has been part number successions on the OG cluster since 2016 release.

Curious if that also meant improvements to reduce the poor visibility.

The LCI OGs got a different cluster. It change the color of the display. Debatable whether it improved visibility. But all the M2Cs got the same cluster as the 2018 OG LCIs.

Yep totally aware of that. I prefer the PreLci look. As I was watching some pov videos of the prelci og m2 on youtube, I noticed some cars had a glare issue with their clusters which lead me to believe there was a discrete update to the prelci cluster between 16 vs 17.

So far consensus and realoem suggest that is the case.

In my experience there's no glare at all. But since the gauges aren't backlit unless the lights are on, if you get into a low-light situation during the day they can be hard to see. It's never been an actual issue for me since those situations tend to be short-lived, but that's the only visibility concern with the original gauges.

I prefer the original, old school look to the LCI gauges as well. Amber lighting all the way.

I hated the gauges on my 2017 for this reason. Never noticed it on any of my previous BMWs (E36, E46, E82). It was the only reason I wanted an LCI (ended up with lower mileage 2017 CPO).

Many folks have replaced the stock gauge cluster with an LCI or M2C cluster.

IND used to sell a kit:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1539174

Others have posted DIY:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1532620

I ended up buying a new M2C cluster from a member who had imported a bunch and with coding it only cost me $350 total. I'm pleased every time I get in the car. The only downside is they scratch if you touch them with *anything* -- can only clean with compressed air.

What production date was your m2? As I mentioned there looked like there was a slight revision to the prelci cluster based on differ p/n right before the LcI production cluster which started in July 2017.

Mine is May 2017, so pretty late in the MY 2017 production.

I've never heard of there being a glare problem with the OG (pre-LCI) cluster. The identified problem is the no backlit/low-light visibility issue (and maybe the digital speed digits being too small). They corrected this issue with the LCI cluster but I agree that the OG cluster looks better than the LCI.

Retrofitting the LCI cluster is pretty easy but, in addition to the 'they scratch if you look at them wrong' problem mentioned by jkoral, there are 3 additional issues IMO:

1) They cost around $1K new (plus coding costs) and the juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

2) You have to buy a new one as only a new one will update itself to show the correct millage of your car (if you use one from a junk yard, it will not update to the correct millage and it has a light on start up to show the millage is not accurate).

3) You have to keep the old one and reinstall it (or at least plug it into the wiring harness) if you take your car to a dealer. The dealer's diagnostic software will recognize that the cluster is not the correct unit and will not allow any updates to the software of other modules until the 'right' cluster is installed.

My car is a late June 17 build (quite possibility the last OG to roll of the production line due to a dealer error) and it has the same cluster as all other OG's I've seen.

^I consider the glare and lack of backlighting all within the same visibility issue experienced with PreLCI vehicles. I have driven a 2016 once before and it was immediately apparent.

However, on two different 2017 models I have driven (including mine), it didn't appear as bad of an issue. Rather the information was still visible during high lighting situations although (alot more faded but no where near as bad as 2016 from my recollection.

Now I don't know if it happens to be the fact that I am in a more set seating position and angle since I now own a 2017 but I can't help but think there was some change after looking up real oem to see if there was any succession part numbers. And based on my research, it suggests there might have been a few revisions right before the LCI cluster was introduced:

62108053081(12/01/2015 — 10/04/2016)
62108053091 (09/01/2016 — 03/25/2017)
62108089847(11/01/2016 — 03/01/2017),
62108090142(03/01/2017 — )

The one part number ending in 0142 appears to be the latest and greatest of the prelci clusters.

Concur with ^^ ...

When driving into low, bright sunlight the dials & info. are all but invisible - the fact that the speedo. needle is red contributes to the issue

Coming from brands - models that had larger digital speedos I am considering a `wireless` GPS unit to mount here ...

living in FL, I found it hard to see with direct sun coming at me. the white on grey design bothered me so I upgraded to the M2C cluster. it does require coding but so worth it in my opinion. it makes the interior look a lot more modernized

The former owner of my car had a limo tint all around, and barely lighter on the windshield. With the low interior light I couldn't read the gauges on my 2017 unless it was high noon outside, or I turned on the lights.

Now that I've removed the tint the visibility of the gauges isn't too bad. But the black/white markings on my M235 were more legible. I can't say I've noticed any glare on the gauges, but maybe I'm used to the similar panel on the M235.

I'd love to upgrade to the LCI panel, but I'm too cheap to spend the money for it.

when upgrading it ran me only like $400 plus coding, it’s well worth it in my opinion
