eBooster

I recall a couple of years back rumors were floating around that BMW was developing a similar system for M cars. If it can live up to its claim of linear power delivery and no turbo lag that would be amazing. Wonder if the next gen M2 or other M cars will get an e-turbo. May sound improbably today, but the the new M5 has AWD so I guess anything can happen.

Here's that thread

I found it incredibly fascinating but it sounds like they could only package it into a V6 or something. I am surprised though that we didn't see anything like this in recent models. I wonder if this is because they'd rather go hybrid and use battery powered assistance at low rpm for fast launches. With that you wouldn't need an eturbo.

Not the thread I recall, it was on the the F80/2 forum. The link you posted was a good read nonetheless, so thanks for that. I see your point regarding a hybrid setup, but feel that this is a more viable option for M cars as it doesn't seem to add as much weight as a hybrid system would.

But of course...emissions as well to consider.

Audi is working on a 48V system that actually generates power from suspension travel, and I believe one of the intended uses of the power was to run an "eTurbo" (really, electric supercharger, no?) to help smooth out lag / allow for a larger main turbo to be used.

It‘s a very interessting technology. I think Audi has a first car out with it, if I remember well, the new SQ7 TDI (4l V8)...which also has the 48V system.

Personally, I think this will be the future for turbo engines.

Didn't Volvo release this on their S90 Diesel?
