Do I have to replace my tires?
So I kerbed the rim and tires making a turn on a narrow road. I was not attentive enough to see the side pavement and I own up I made a mistake. This incident took a bit of my tire as well and created an abrasion, it is on the side walls. I have checked at a local tire shop and a rim fixing shop and got two different opinions. The tire shops(good reputation in the region) says replace the tires as it is on the side wall (it could be possible that they are trying to get some business) while the rim fix shop says i don't need to as it is on the leading edge of the side wall which is common in the performance tires like MSS. I did take a tour of the rim fix shop and their work is quite impressive while also considering they have couple of ferrari's, bentley's, range rover on the shop for work. I have been driving on varying speeds upto 160Kmh(~95mph) and have no issues in the driving characteristics of the car so far and have done nearly 150 Kms since the incident. The tires only has 4K miles on it as the car is new and honestly I don't want to change the tires unless it is a hazard. Thoughts from the bimmerpost family is appreciated! I'd replace the tyre. The picture shows a lot of damage so you don't know what could have been done to the structure underneath. It's not worth the risk of a blowout.
Depending on how you drive, 4K miles may be heading towards replacing the tyres anyway. The PSS lose a lot of turn-in bite once they get down to 3-4mm of remaining tread so I replaced mine at 5K miles. Conveniently, the PS4's had just come out so swapped for them. Had the PS4's for ~6-months and they are great - wearing a bit better too so probably will get around 7K miles a set out of those. |

I would definitively replace them. Damage looks quite bad on the pictures. It is indeed on the sidewall, but you don't know how far the damage goes, and also how it will behave under high loads (like quick curves and so on..)

Definitely. Unfortunately, sidewall damage is a blowout waiting to happen... and that sidewall damage looks pretty bad.

Christ - don't even bother with the video. Replace the tire, do both on the axel if more than 2/32 different in tread depth new to old.

I\'ve driven on a tire with similar damage till it was bald. However its your life, your car, your tire, so you do whatever you wanna do.

Speed rated performance tires? Until they were bald?

Safety first. Let common sense prevail over cost. If the tire blows, things could end pretty badly. It's like Russian Roulette with only a few empty gun chambers.
So, yes, get yourself and others peace of mind by replacing that tire. And it's the right opportunity to get Pilot Sport 4S.

Makes sense, they won't repair if the puncture is closer than an inch (I think) to the sidewall.Oh well 4S are great tires.

I changed to the 4S last year from the crappy Contis my car came with and the 4s is an impressive upgrade. They wear very well also, I have 17,000 miles on mine and probably can get another 8-10k out of them. Excellent tires.
