What's even more impressive is that this time was achieved in a 6MT. Way to go!!

I can attest to Shaun being an excellent driver. I've participated in several HPDE's with him and could never keep up, even when he was driving his old e36 M3. That being said, professionals do have the advantage of doing this for a living AND can push a car further, because they aren't on the hook should they crash the car. I don't know about you guys, but I don't drive 10/10's because I want to drive my car home after an HPDE.

BTW, was Martin Tomszyk a DCT car? That certainly would give him a bit of an advantage over a 6MT.

Shaun I see your getting comfortable in the M2 now. Still loving it?

AFAIK that was a DCT(they used only DCTs @ LS)

Yeah I agree in general with what you are saying.
Or you have to practice some more to keep up with him lol.

But:Put Tomczyk in Webster's car and let's see what happens with the laptimes

Cheers

"BMW M2" **well modified**

The Boss 302 with a solid rear axle and hundreds more pounds beats it by a full second on OEM tires.

Yep. And a DCT with it to make them *faster *

While we know the DCT is faster 0-60.. (see first gear in the DCT box vs MT ) .. I would love to see two cars, same driver same day and same track. DCT and MT. The gearing ratios of the DCT make it quicker in gears 1-3 but I'm not so sure that this advantage remains as the gears move upward in the DCT box... due to the spacing of the gear ratios in the 7 speed DCT it may not have an advantage on track depending on shift points

It's common knowledge that a DCT is faster than a manual, because one does not have to lift off the throttle during gearshifts. However, what often gets overlooked is that on a turbo engine (as in the M2), it makes an even bigger difference than on a N/A engine, because a turbo engine needs boost to make full power and when you lift during shifts (with a manual) the boost drops briefly. With a DCT you keep full throttle during shift and thus full boost. It might only amount to a couple of tenths per shift, but add that up over the course of a lap and it probably adds up to a second or two, depending on track.

Side note: I track an e46 M3/6MT and it probably makes about 365 hp. My DD is a 200 hp GTI with DSG and for the longest time I could not figure out why it feels almost as quick as my M3, despite it being way down on power. I always figured its just because of the flatter torque curve of the turbo engine, but the other factor is what I described above. Accelerating with the DSG is so seamless, you just bang through the gears and stay in a fairly narrow rpm range. As much as I love N/A engines and manual transmissions, it is no surprise to me that turbos and DCT's are taking over. They are faster, pure and simple.
