In any case, if they replace the N55 with the S55 in the base car, the price bump will not drive down the MY 2016/17 resale. And if it is marginally profitable now... you can bet they will not have a small price bump. I also don't see a reason to replace the N55 with the B58 in the base M2 and keep the price low... as that again will again cannibalize the M240i sales into a less profitable car. I am not worried in any way. All the future possibilities do not change the fact my MY2017 chugging its way across the Atlantic will be a fantastic car! |

At the end of the day at least my M2 won't sound like someone farting in a kazoo underwater.
I'll add LED tails and enjoy.

I am only an electrical engineer, the incandescent lights need more time to achieve full brightens, it is not about the electrons, it is about the temperature of the filament required to achieve full brightness, we are talking milliseconds but they do count in an emergency.

I have been a firm believer of using the smallest turbo to achieve target boost within its efficiency zone, so the turbo response could be best.
But with m2 n55, for the very first time, I feel the turbo is too small even for stock power level. I really think B58 turbo is of the perfect size for 15-16psi & 370-390 "BMW" crank hp, which LCI m2 should get.

B58 is twin scroll turbo, single exhaust manifold equals one downpipe and a single exhaust track. S55 is two turbos, two downpipes and two separate exhaust tracks. The exhausts are distinctly different. There is a 99% chance the pictured vehicle has an S55 engine and that it sounds just like the M3/4. Which makes me very happy. If they switch over the S55 after 1.5 model years, I will quite happily accept being the owner of a now limited M car, noted as being the first truly great M car of its generation, and the best sounding. Yes please.
More likely, it's an end of lifecycle special model and heralds the end of the current 1 and 2 series chassis. |

I do agree with you about the "limited" M car anology but for different reasons, personally I think the first generation of M2 will looked down as a bit of a performance compromise with the N55 and the one that had the iffy back-lit instrument cluster Last edited by Nine Lives; 10-31-2016 at 03:02 AM.. |

Here is what will tell the answer to this puzzle:
The X4 M40i uses the the same N55 as the M2. That car is not due for an LCI anytime soon. But if they're fazing out that engine in favor of either an S55 or B58 variants, we'll be seeing test mules of the X4 with the new engines soon. If we do not, then the M2 LCI (base) version and the X4 will both carry on with the N55 |

Noice.
My bet is the B58 goes in for MY2018 LCI. Makes zero sense to keep the N55 around for only two models, imo.
S55, even in detuned format, seems more likely for M2 CS. Love the OLEDs; now offer the sunroof on US-Spec MY2018 LCI's. Either way, looks like I'll continue to wait for LCI. |

Plausible to change, but not for those reasons obviously - look at history. The decision heavily depends on M engineering's progress on all their goals with a performance version of the B58.

what if BMW in the future adds all customizable options to the M2 along with the S55 engine and a hard top convertible and then gets rid of the M4 alltogether, hey you never know imo this would be the way to go IF they are going as far as to change the engine
assuming a more expensive M2 S55 it doesnt seem like any sense to continue with a M2, M3, M4 all in the lineup Last edited by gtaM2; 10-31-2016 at 11:27 AM.. |

Really? I thought the M4 GTS was camo'd A lot more than this if I remember correctly. I think they would at least keep the GTS trend going and have some sort of front lip and rear wing and probably different wheels. Although this could just be them testing the engine out then adding cosmetic modifications later. Who knows. Idk how they go about this it's all just pure speculation which sucks because we're just basically going to be speculating for a year. Mannnnn they should just tell the owners of the M2's now what the plan is so we can decide what's best for us. That would be TRUE customer service- A man can only wish though lol

What was your source stating they aren't spending that much money to produce this car? I would be interested in seeing that. |
