I'm in Toronto. I have over 24,000km on my m2. The only time I think I miss AWD is if I'm going to go skiing or if there more than 2" of snow on the ground. AWD is definitely a benefit and provides peace of mind. I have an X1 where I do drive most of the winter since I don't have to worry at about weather in the least. But the m2 has winters as well and does get out ( I can't resist ).
But I think the m2 is capable if it isn't more of the extreme winter. i.e. deeper snow or ice. With the wider wheels traction may be an issue. In heavy ice and freezing rain, the X1 did slide around but I was never worried since I knew at least 1 wheel would catch. On the m2, there definitely would be... issues...

Simply said, the M2 won't give you the traction of AWD in limited grip scenarios but I'm an early adopter, daily driving ever since. Roughly 32k miles in the clock through rain, snow, ice, storm...country roads or expressways, there are very few sacrifices. In my opinion, it's a small sacrifice in grip, not stability, and those are well worth the fun and engagement provided over AWD alternatives.
I used to be team AWD since my first car (e30 325ix), then I came to learn what I was missing. This car makes me smile all seasons. |
