PCD - PPF Alternatives used to get home?

Saw one Owner who stayed an extra night after PCD to have a local shop install PPF before driving home.

Read a few other comments/suggestions about temporary materials / products ie; TracWrap, etc and even clear Contact (removable) Shelf paper. A few others decided to let the paint go naked

Looking for recent experiences of others who have used temporary protection for the ride home after PCD. How did it work out?

Thanks in advance

Don't miss out on the opportunity of protecting it from the get go.

I took advantage of having Extreme Colors Auto Spa right there close to the Performance Center to have them take care of it for me. And I know many others than have done the same and are very happy with the results.

They do all the cars of the Performance Center and PPF is well worth it specially immediately after taking delivery and before the haul home.

My two cents.

I installed TracWrap on my M2 outside the Welt in September for a 2 week trip. Removed it outside the Hilton just across the street from LOGINOUT. Removal was easy. Installed it again at the Performance Center in SC in December at redelivery. It works as advertised.

Your post caught my attention - we're thinking of doing the same thing for our ED. I was on their site, looking at the different sized rolls, and trying to figure out how this works, how much you need, how much suitcase space it takes up, etc. How much did you carry with you, and how much of the car did you do? Did you find that having it on the car took something away from the photos you took of the car during the trip? I appreciate any feedback you can offer, thank you.

I bought one 12-inch roll and one 6-inch roll. I wrapped the hood, front bumper, and mirror caps. I had a couple friends helping me so we took our time and did a pretty good job at the Welt. It doesn’t need to be perfect. I did the same for PCD (redelivery). I shared the excess 6-inch roll with a fellow EDer at the Performance Center in SC. Regarding car photos, the delivery photos at the Welt and outside the Welt were the most important too me. Personally, I wouldn’t let the possibility of a negative impact on picture taking govern your decision.

I'm definitely doing that. My PCD is in March. I glad I found out about that place.

They are awesome.. I drove up from Florida last November to bring them my 135i for full paint correction and 5 year Ceramic Pro Coating. Worth the trip!

I'm near Atlanta, so I don't have far to drive. There is a place here that I was going to let do it, but I figured it might be better to let the shop in SC do it while I'm there.

Extreme Colors about 15mins away from BMW Performance Center.

Extreme Colors Auto Spa / Clear Bra Greenville, 700 Woodruff Rd #6, Greenville, SC 29607

I've done Trakktape and/or blue painters tape many many times from SC to MI. Only concern is rain. Application best practice is: horizontal surfaces like hood = back to front, vertical = bottom to top both with about 1/2" overlap. Bubbles are not a problem; however, try to minimize by applying the trakktape slowly and following behind with felt applicator.

Excellent, thank you. So one 12-inch roll and part of a 6-inch roll. That's easy to get into luggage. Much appreciated.

Thanks 4 Replies

Thanks for ALL the Replies & those who joined in the Topic.

Sounds like TracWrap is the product of choice of most who needed temp protection.
For those that went that way, did you do PPF as soon as you got home. if so, how much PPF did you choose? Happy?

ECAS - seems like they are becoming a popular immediate Option for PPF.
What happens if a couple or more deliveries on the same day try to schedule a Wrap? Yes, obviously scheduling ahead is key but wondering.

For those who used ECAS, how much PPF did you choose?

Choosing a Tint / PPF(even tougher given $$) is not easy when not familiar with the local area, as I discovered last year when shopping for Window Tint.

I've never used PPF - so I've been researching that too & listening to the various opinions of one Mfg/Product vs another

Now I'm living in another new area, so I've done some research on local shops but the combination of needing protection for trip back (about 400 mi) & all the positive Reviews makes ECAS tempting vs time for more research & rolling the dice locally. Also having a place (ECAS) that does similar cars over & over has to be a big plus.

Thanks again

I had PPF installed a short time after redelivery. Full front (bumper, headlights, hood, fenders), rockers, mirrors, inside door handles, removed stock piece between rear wheel and door and replaced with larger coverage area, added coverage behind the rear wheels and on rear bumper along trunk opening. Used SunTek Ulta and XPEL Ultimate on the rockers. The clarity and hydrophobic properties of SunTek Ultra is second to none.

Did same as BAN_M2 and left my car overnight at Extreme Colors right after PCD (Nov. 17). Picked up the car the next afternoon and off I went. Also got a chance to hang out in Greenville and had a fun night out downtown. It's actually a pretty cool little town

+1 on Tracwrap. They let me use my bay during PCD to install it. The wife and I did it, took about an hour. Super easy, not the prettiest, but got the job done.

Thanks for the contribution including a 2nd shop near PCD +video

Your M2 looked amazing after PCB treatment. Are You still happy with the choice & has the Coating performed well since getting home?

Why did You choose Coating vs PPF?

Liked the extra protection the coating gave for the whole car.

This is not a daily driver for me. I only have 2K miles on the car and I picked 11/8.

Still have not done any PPF yet but still may. If I do I really want to do a Stealth wrap on the entire car for the matte / frozen finish look.

Thanks for info / details. This is a whole new world for me.
I thought about a wrap too late - would have ordered white, save $ and found wrap in color I really wanted.........in the mean time, I'll enjoy my MG once it arrives.

I'm still leaning toward PPF just not sure how much area & if coating the rest will be a good combination. Still researching
