M2 Dimensions - interesting facts

The M2, at 176.2 inches long, is pretty compact. Take a look at the list below:

BMW F82 M4 184.5 in
2017 Honda Civic Type R 179.4 in
E46 M3 176.8 in
E30 M3 171.1 in

Lol! Would you "sacrifice" an increase in the M2's length by 3.2 inches to have the 2017 Honda Civic Type R's weight of 3,117 lbs?

Fair point! Where I do think that BMW spends a lot of time/engineering, and ultimately weight, are two areas: Structural strength (unibody, safety cage) and rigidity (suspension structural reinforcement, subframes). It's a design trade that compromises overall weight for a more robust structure. I'll take that over pure curb weight savings.

Do you happen to have the width difference between the M2 and M4?

Still a lot longer than my TTRS at 165.3″...

But they had to add room for rear passengers somewhere.

It's just going to make it a very tight fit in my stupid short garage.

Technically the garage isn't that short, but due to the layout and where the stairs to the house are and the requirement to leave room for people to walk past, I don't have as much F/R room as my wife's side. She has a Forester so we can't switch, so I basically *must* have small-ish cars.

Which I don't really mind, because I hate driving big stuff, even though I myself am pretty large.

What's really interesting is the curb weight between an M2 w/MT and an e46 M3 w/MT is the same at 3,450 lbs. The curb weight between an e46 M3 with SMG differs by only 3 lbs between it and the M2; e46 M3 w/SMG 3,508 lbs. | M2 w/DCT 3,505 lbs.

BMW's e46 M3 6mt curb weight with 6mt is 3415 lbs. BMW's e46 M3 SMG curb weight is 3450 lbs. I don't know why C&D published that curb weight, but it certainly isn't the official one from BMW.

But, you should compare BMW's numbers to BMW's numbers-- not compile numbers from different sources with different procedures.
(e.g. some curb weights include a driver and small suit case, some don't, some are the base car, some are "as typically optioned")

This winter I should be getting mine under 3000 lbs with full interior (including back seat) and a quiet muffler

Where are you getting your weights from? Doing some extensive Google'n this was the only legacy web page I could find direct from BMW on a 2004 M3 Coupe. Its weight doesn't match any of the numbers that have been discussed thus far.

I promise you that if you put both the M2 and Civic Type R on a rack and look under the interior panels, the underbody, and under the hood, you'd see the robustness in the BMW engineering compared to a factory modified Civic. I'm not knocking the CTR at all and i am in an amazement of its performance (not looks); however, it's not built to the standards of BMW. I work on my own cars and had a 2012 WRX before my M235 (my first German car ever at 42l). The difference in engineering is boggling. Not trying to be a BMW nutswinger, but it's clear to me why the 2 series is a bit hefty for it's size. My M235, no moonroof, 6mt, and full weight is 3,335.

the funny thing is that the 7er G11 has more weight savings in core like any M car. which is kinda......stupid. im not saying that the G11 is lighter then an M car, but they made much more effort to save weight compared the older 7 series. Why dont they do the same effort on the m cars is beyond me. the new 7 series has carbon in the raw chassis. On the M cars we just get this trendy carbon here and there which does not seriouely save weight or have any purpose. new 7 series is like 120 kg lighter then the old. 120kg!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats a lot. last time BMW made such a weight saving was the M3 CSL

Correct, that will hopefully change moving forwards. All current M car are F chassis. Let's see what the G chassis brings to the M. For example even with added X Drive the new M5 will be lighter than the outgoing by a margin. How much carbon core is carried over the general 5 I'm not certain. Then let's see next gen M3/4 etc etc. Jus the way BMW model proliferation works, 7er would have it first.

Unlikely since they listed as "curb weight" rather than "weight". Also, I'm not sure how they would have optioned a car to be that heavy stock.

... and either way you were comparing C&D numbers (e46) to BMW's numbers (M2).

From their US web site in 2005 (since the US website is what was linked for the M2)-- 3415 for 6mt, 3450 for SMG.

European curb weight is a different standard, so number won't line up.

I do feel like focusing on curb weights in general is a little silly, as "as typically optioned" can vary the weight of a car A LOT, and different standards around the world add confusion.

Better to just get your car corner balanced and know the exact weight of your individual car.
