Hard Drive Capacity?

Sorry if this has been discussed, but I did a search in the forum and couldn't find the answer. I also couldn't find it in the online manual.

Does anyone know the capacity (or the usable ******* of the hard drive to store music in the M2?

Also, I've seen some members mention that they are using a portable hard drive. In the manual it states specifically that hard drives won't work, but I'm guessing some do? Does anyone know the file system it can read? FAT32 ok?
exFat? Going on a road trip, going to need some music.

Lastly, If HD's do work, I have a regular platter 250gb portable HD but also am thinking about buying a 1TB SSD portable HD. I'm guessing they both should work if the HD's do work. Has anyone tried a portable SSD? If so, does it work? and does anyone know the max capacity and if the SSD is faster than the platter like it should be?

FAT32/exFAT/NTFS compatible. Not sure about HFS or the new Apple File System. So external hard drives will work as long as it's formatted to one of those and at least one end is USB 2.

SSD is at the very least 5x the speed of HDD. I'd imagine that the advantage extends to iDrive/M2s system when accessing the drive. The advantage would be most noticeable in indexing and listing of directories. Not sure if you're going to notice with continued use as I'm sure that iDrive has some kind of cache system that would be make the difference negligible.

Can't help you on the internal hard drive since I don't have my M2 yet.

If anyone has a good article/forum post/tutorial on the best way to structure the files, album art, and playlists it would be greatly appreciated

SSD over spinning platter all day - not only for speed, but because of vibrations. The platter wont last if always vibrating. SSD will not care.

Any tips on organizing? Folders by album? Playlists? Does iDrive look at mp3 tagging with genres/artists etc?

I'm just now looking into this too. I may get a used iPod Touch and throw it into the armrest, as recommended in some of these threads:

Yes, id3 tagging works, even album art.

I've been searching on google on how to browse through a disc or HD by folders and files. Couldn't find anything, but last night I looked through the manual and apparently you CAN do it.

I'll post the manual pic and the directions tonight. If I remember correctly, click left while on your USB HD and click on 'browse' or was it 'search'.

Is there any way to see the used capacity? I just imported several albums and now cannot find how much space is left.

I think you just press Options on the Music Collection menu.
