M2 DCT holding on the first gear for too long after startup

Hey guys, I have a question regarding the DCT - I have had my M2 for a little over the year and I have noticed some weird behaviour of the DCT which is more pronounced in winter months.

When I start my car, I have to go out of a garage and then drive up a small hill (approx. 100 metres). If i leave my DCT in drive (no paddle shifts), it changes gears only after reaching approximately 4000 RPMs or reaching the flat surface (and even then it revs high before shifting into second). I guess it is not good for cold engine to rev so high so I usually change it manually. After that first shift, it usually quickly goes into second, third, and fourth and after that it shifts completely normal.

Is this behaviour normal? And should I be using manual shifts to override that first shifting procedure?

Thanks so much!

Sounds normal to me.

I waited for others to chime in because my situation wasn't identical. When cold, the DCT does hand up a little in first gear, but I'm not going uphill after backing out of my driveway.

It would be nice if the car would automatically rev limit in cold conditions but I believe it's just sensing the throttle required and load on the transmission to get up the hill and gives you more revs. Not knowing that in that moment it should go to 2nd.

No ... SPORT only selected when the temperature gauge is at OK

Also:

From cold start on level ground it hangs on to first, if changed up manually and then back to auto it remains in second (at < 10mph)

When hot and going slowly (< 10mph) up our long driveway in COMFORT auto it will drop to first and not accept a manual upshift until a slight increase in speed (~ > 10mph)

I accept this as standard practice ...

I've noticed this too on the first upshift when the car is cold and your driving uphill. Maybe next time I run into some colleagues who work in the DCT engineering department, Ill ask what they think.

so in all the automatics I own with a ZF5HP, they do stay in 1st longer for "cold start" behavior. Think it is emissions related.

Mine does the same when I'm driving out of underground parking garage at my apartment. I limit the revs by driving up really slowly. I tend to not manually shift when the DCT is cold because it puts itself into the fastest shifting mode, which doesn't help with the longevity of the transmission.

If you’re in comfort mode, the transmission stays in comfort as well with manual shifting. Also, faster shifting means less clutch slip, which means longer clutch life. So ironically, faster shifting is better for the trans.

All bmw autos do this in my experience. Probably intentionally set that way from factory to warm the transmission fluid to operating temp quicker

Clutches are slipped a little more on startup to warm up transmission temperature.

If it bothers you, shift into 2nd manually.

You are right, I agree with you. For the past few days, I have been searching for a writing service provider website, and from tons of websites, I have selected this https://stateofwriting.com/uk/dissertation-proposal website to write my dissertation for me, their work says it all: why they are at the top. They were affordable and professional, and I was impressed with their work. You can also try them.
