I don't have an lci cluster so i can't tell of how easily it scratches but from reading what others are saying, they seem very soft. I wonder how they install it without scratching them? Do they have a protective film that the dealer takes off?

How are you guys seeing these scratches? If I take a bright LED flashlight, hold it about 4 inches from the gauge cluster, and shine it at an angle, only then can I see some very, very fine scratches (akin to super-fine straight "swirl" marks), but there's no way I'd ever see those in anything approaching normal driving conditions.

I do have what looks like the remnants of a "drip" toward the top center edge of the gauge cluster, but that was there when I took delivery of the car, and again, a bright light has to basically shining directly on it to see it. I'm considering mentioning it to the dealer, but I strongly suspect a replacement cluster would wind up worse off just by going through the installation process and getting manhandled by the repair technicians.

I've only ever wiped the gauges off with either a Swiffer duster or (more frequently) with a double-thick edgeless, dry MF towel with super light pressure. I'm sensitive to these types of scratches (probably to a fault), and I find the matte LCI display masks the light scratches I do have extremely well. My 2015 335i's gauge cluster was a PITA by comparison.

I personally like the classic (pre LCI) instrument cluster (orange backlight), it feels more raw and mechanical.

However, the grey on grey really suck in Australian sunlight, I can hardly see the rev and speed needles when driving without switching on the dashboard backlight.

Soft plastic over the instrument panels on cars have pissed me off for years. You can't wipe them when they have dust on them...ever. Blow the dust off, use the softest cloth made in the universe that is damp, wipe the cluster without any force. Be prepared to still have very fine scratches, it can not be avoided. While I'm bitching about it, how about the piano black stuff...same problem...stupid design.

Has anyone managed to find out if it is possible to code the backlight to orange? Almost like how a lot of the X models have classic/sport lighting modes?

I hate my piano black trim in my X1 so much that I actually wrote to BMW. Basically a completely unacceptable choice of material for surfaces you interact with. I'll be wrapping mine at some point to hide the microswirl shame

It isn't. You'd have to remove the cluster, take it apart, remove all of the LEDs individually and solder new one's on by hand.

I prefer LCI, main purpose of gauges is to show you information while you're driving, regardless of direct sunlight.

To clean, maybe you can use tape, not like a super sticky packing stuff, but maybe something like a 3M electrical tape.

That's what I'll try before I bring out the baby wipes. Lol.

Hi guys new on here i picked up my 2018 BMW m2 in grey on Saturday 31st March had for one week love it just running it in but has come up with lighting system fault been back in at BMW got it back last night drove to work today and it came back on anyone else had this lighting problem and know what is wrong ? Thanks Mark

Well happy to report I still have had no issues with retrofit cluster. Pre lci M2 seems to like the new unit.

I really liked the original gray dials in my '17 M2, however - it's 2018, and the LCI is an improvement in every way. imho
