I can only speak for Homestead. But you can do a full track day in your car for that money (or less). Personally, don't think it is worth it. It used to be promotional, hence free...

Will they have run groups based on experience?

I went last year at Thermal and the people that knew how to drive stuck together and it was fun.
The instructor has the lead with 3-4 cars following and if the person behind the instructor (or any car in between) can't keep up then the instructor slows down.

Would be frustrating if all your run groups couldn't drive.

I did the free event at LimeRock last year too and loved it. I was sad to see it costs $250 but its still totally worth it. Considering a 2 Day M school costs $3k, 1 Day $1.5k, Car Control Clincs $750, $250 is freaking bargain. Yeah it sucks its not free but I guess they wanted to see if they'd make any money off it and hit gold.
$250 definitely only covers a fraction of the costs, it's expensive to run a track day like this and when it was free people would just sign up on a whim and then not show up. Charging ensures that spots won't go wasted and all of the serious enthusiasts that want to go won't miss out on empty spots
Makes sense, but then why not ask for a CC and have a cancellation policy that enables them to charge the $250 if one does not show up?

Having said that I am sure there will be plenty of people willing to pay for it, so who ever had the idea at BMW of charging for them will get a pad in the back for saving the company some money.

Personally, I think that money is better spent on a track day (yes there might be other costs associated with a track day, but from my experience those are relatively marginal on one day).

There's 12 more program dates and two more tracks for 2017 versus 2016 - the $250 helps make that to happen

Don't they realize that people in WA who own BMWs don't live anywhere near Shelton, WA? We are all in the Seattle area.

The activities would be ok for anyone who's never been on the track, I did it last year at homestead and unfortunately lots of characters also came out that day : If you're a track rat this is not for you.

I disagree. This is a half day session and pple say the curriculum is not much driving.
I just did the M control clinic day for 750$. Itnis worth it b/c u get lots of driving for that price and lots of training in their M car.
In perspective Skip Barber half day school in mazda/open wheel car is 550$ and You get way less driving there.

The Ridge is a much nicer track than Pacific Raceways and it's only ~90min away.

It looks like they're now charging $250, which is in line with the Performance Center "Experience" events which have been offered to groups in the past, including BMW CCA Chapters. The first M Experience event I attended was in September 2015 with my local BMW CCA chapter and cost $199. The second one I attended was in January 2016 and that one cost $209. Our chapter just did another one in January for $220. They're doing it again in January 2018 for $225, so the costs are going up.

The M Track Day I attended last September was at no cost and also included lunch. This is usually after the event if it's a morning event, or before the event if it's an afternoon event, although the e-mail and the website doesn't specifically mention lunch.

Here's the details from the e-mail:

PUSH LIMITS. BREAK RECORDS.

No red lights. No speed limits. This is an unparalleled kind of driving.

At BMW M Track Days, you’ll leave the road behind and live the life of a racecar driver. Sign up for this thrilling event and drive the full M lineup, receive professional instruction and exclusive access to renowned racetracks, and race to complete a timed lap that qualifies you for a nationwide driving competition – all for $250.

Find your track. Win your track.

Snapped up a ticket for Thermal in late September yesterday.
Way cheaper than M School at the same venue. ($250 vs. $1550 1-day M or $4000 2-day.)

I'm guessing this is similar to what is offered at BMW Genius trainings? If it is, it is well worth it. Came back from my trip two weeks ago. Although it was complimentary, I would pay $250 to do it once more.
