IND | F87 M2 Keyhole DIY
We found that F87 utilizes the same keyhole cover as F22/F80/E9X etc, which makes things super simple. Thanks BMW As with the other cars I highly recommend reinstalling the lock cylinder behind the cover in case you ever encounter a dead battery.
Tools needed: -4mm Allen key or 4mm hex socket with extension -Box cutter or exacto knife with a sharp blade (if you plan to reinstall lock cylinder) Step 1: Pull back the weather stripping trim on the inside of the door to gain access to the 4mm allen bolt. Step 2: Unscrew the bolt that holds the keyhole in place. You will not need to completely remove this bolt to release the keyhole. Step 3: Remove the keyhole from the door. We found that turning the lock cylinder with the actual key from your FOB helps the release the key hole. If you plan to not reinstall the lock cylinder please skip to step 7. Step 5: Remove the lock cylinder from the OEM keyhole by using a small flat blade screwdriver by prying on the black tabs. The will release the cover. Step 6: On your new painted keyhole you will need to trim the cutout on the inside of both black tabs. This will allow a much easier installation. Step 7: Insert your painted keyhole with lock cylinder back into the door. Step 8: Tighten the 4mm bolt while holding the keyhole in place. Step 9: Put the weatherstripping back into place.

Can you post a picture elaborating what needs to be done in step 6 regarding trimming the tabs? I don't want to cut away the wrong portion of the tab. Thanks.

Just did this this morning. Trim the little rectangular cut-out on the inside of the black tabs so that it snaps into place better. Took some doing, started with utility knife and ended with dremel tool.

So just a heads up to anyone who may be thinking of this. After installing then lock didn't work for some reason. Seemed to be seated normally. Had to go back to original with keyhole. Then CA didn't work but did after a drive. Hope others have better luck.

I did the same thing to get it out. A single turn was all it took for me.

Few questions
- how can I avoid any comfort access errors? - what position does the lock cylinder need to be in prior to removal and reinstallation?

So everything that could go wrong went wrong.
Somehow the door handle got pulled out. To get it back in you need to pull the retainer clip forward and then hold it in place with a screwdriver or pry tool while slotting the handle back in. turning the screw did not fix my lock problem. CA and the lock itself weren't working. The lock would spazz in its column. Reinstalling with the chamber turned and then doing a turn once installed then going for a drive fixed it for me. Careful if you make those tabs flush as well because the cover will barely be hanging in there. Almost guarantee to fall out. shave them only a little bit.

Done but not w/o some significant anxiety.
Had the same issue with CA not working and the door actually not locking whatsoever after initial install. Drive did not resolve. Had to disassemble (much harder to get cylinder out w/o the ability to put the key in to aid removal. Remove new cover, turn key with cylinder back in the door seated all the way (aggressive clunk to re-engage the lock) put new blank cover back on w/ cylinder in place and now locking function and CA is restored - PHEW!

Any tips on actually on getting the cylinder to release? I am having no luck at all. I'm "patiently wiggling" but with some good pressure. The bolt is all the way unwound and I definitely have some gap and wiggle. I've tried the door key to loosen it and nada. For people that had success, did you actually leave the key in and turned when trying to get the cylinder to break free?

OK. I'll give it another go. So much for an easy first mod. Just let go cylinder. Give up.
