BMW M2 not made by M gmbh?
I was copying down my new M2's vin number, and I noticed that the sticker indicates that the car was made by BMW. I thought that the M cars were made by M gmbh, but mine was not. Which M cars are made by M gmbh?

All of the M cars are made on the regular production line with other BMW models. The M3 is made at the Regensburg plant, the M4 at the Munich plant and the M2 at the Leipzig plant.

Not a real M unless VIN sticker shows M gmbh as the manufacturer.

Thanks for the responses. Does anyone have a door jamb sticker on their M2 that reads "M gmbh?" Or do they all read "Bayerische Motoren Werke" since the cars (presumably) are manufactured at the same factory?

Can I ask why? It is a well known fact the M2 is made in Leipzig, and as others before me have mentioned, the M models get made in a variety of plants, so there's not really an "M plant" anymore.

You have the correct door jamb VIN sticker. It is the same door jamb sticker as all other M2 owners. Exactly as you describe it. There is also a transversely oriented, repetitive BMW watermark on the door jamb sticker which reflects light differently depending on the angle of your direction of gaze.

Look at the VIN and here's a VIN decoder:
A good read here also: http://www.autohausaz.com/bmw-auto-p...n-numbers.html WBS == Motorsport aka M GMBH (BMW Motorsport GMBH became BMW M GMBH at some point) The VIN breakdown is what tells you it's an M car. Look at this M235i VIN for example: VX33000 and you'll see it's a WBA VIN, i.e,. not a full M car. BMW M2 are all WBS vehicles. https://www.etkbmw.com/bmw/EN/vin/decoder/VX33000/EN M GMBH is a subsidiary of BMW AG, and given that all M cars are produced in standard BMW plants (V for Leipzig on our M2 VIN numbers), it doesn't really matter what the plaque says on it or not. Comparing to some older plaques, this new one doesn't even have the model name or anything. Only the VIN, manufacture date, weight ratings, and an unknown-to-me code at bottom-right of the plaque/sticker. |

During early production the M2 body had to be physically removed from the assembly line for this "marriage" since the suspension underpinnings of the M2 where too wide for the standard Liepzig 2 series assembly line. This limited the number of M2's coming off the line. Production is now up to over 800 M2's per month so I assume this "marriage" step has been automated. *Not sure exactly where the engine is mated to the powertrain, i.e. suspension, drivetrain, transmission and M-differential in preparation for "marriage". I am assuming this most likely occurs at Liepzig. Last edited by reppucci; 04-18-2017 at 01:09 PM.. Reason: added info |

My 95 E36 M3 door jamb sticker says built by BMW GmbH. I think the E34 M5 was the last M car hand-built at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany

My Z4M also said BMW M GmbH on the sticker, and that car was built in SC.

Note There is NO Model, i.e. M2, listed. I suspect this is the generic Liepzig doorjamb sticker. It does not state Manufactured by BMW MGmbH. I was confirming to OP that his VIN door jamb is like every other M2's Door jamb VIN Last edited by reppucci; 04-20-2017 at 09:57 AM.. |

Thanks for the information. I saw that the 1 M Coupe's door jamb sticker also reads "Bayerische Motoren Werke" instead of "M Gmbh." It seems that the door jamb sticker is nothing to be disappointed about!
