I had my 325 from 18-23 and then I scooped up the Z4 which I also had for 5 years. While I had the Z4 I had the 330 which I used for uber. After I god rid of the 330 I scooped up a Z4M because the deal was too good. Within 8 months sold it missed the coupe and got the Z4M (coupe). Had that for about a year and a half and then got tboned. Got the 650xdrive and only had it for 5 months couldn't get a deal on an M2. Once the dealers started to play ball on the M2 price I traded up.

See, when I read stuff like that, it makes me think my MBA was just money down the drain...

But good on you man, I can't wait to get my hands onto a M car.

Old Guys with Beemers and Bimmers

My first BMW was a motorcycle: 1995 K75
My 2nd BMW was a motorcycle: 1999 R1100S
My 3rd BMW was a motorcycle: 2004 K1200RS
My 4th BMW was a car: 2010 135i M Sport
My 5th BMW was a motorcycle: 2014 K1300Sf
My 6th BMW was a car: 2018 M2 (LCI)

I have ridden 159,000 miles on BMW motorcycles; rode over 2000 miles in the past 3 weeks.
My current stable:
Car 1: 2010 135i M Sport (130,000 miles)
Bike 1: 2014 K1300S (21,500 miles)
Car 2: 2018 M2 (7000 miles)

In German, the BMW saying is not 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' but 'Freude am Fahren' = 'The Joy of Driving'...not parking it and being proud of low mileage.

Get out there and ride or drive while you have life!

I've been meaning to respond to this message. You can't let yourself think like that - it's a common mistake people make, comparing their situation to those of people around them. But everybody has a different set of circumstances, you just have to focus on your own thing. Too many people are buried in debt trying to keep up with the purchasing patterns of others. And your MBA was only money down the drain if you coasted your way through the program and got nothing out of it and can't use it to enhance your career opportunities.

We've watched our neighbors leaving to move into bigger houses with crushing mortgages, and buying new cars with home equity, and making the mistake of trying to seem richer than they are. We instead played the long game, focusing on building a business, saving money, eliminating debt and creating some sense of freedom from the proverbial hamster wheel. I'm 51 and just got my first M car, after milking a 2004 Mazda 3 for 14 years and now 115K miles. It's not my first sports car - have had multiple V8 Mustangs and a Porsche - but my first NEW German car. And it was worth the wait. Just be patient, build a strong financial base, and good things will happen.

Sounds right. We have a med student, with a M4 Comp and GTR. Sold his tech company prior to joining med school.

I'm a resident as well. Had a kid so convinced wife E90 was appropriate. Will consider F90 M5 once an attending.

Wise post was wise! Thank you for that, I really appreciate those kind words of your, especially when you didn't have to and you went out of your way to write such an encouraging post. Thank you.

Speaking of a 2004 Mazda 3, I HAVE ONE TOO (and a Mazdaspeed 3). The normal 2004 Mazda 3 was my first car that my parents purchased for me for college, it's still going damn strong. The only thing we've replaced on that car has been misc. random sensors. It's now ticking into 130,000miles. I've now passed that onto my parents ever since I got my own Mazdaspeed 3.

I'm actually going to purchase a new X1/X2 for my parents come winter time. It's about time they drive a nice new car, not some hand-me-down. We don't come from money, everyone single new car they purchased was for either myself or my sisters, even if it was just a Mazda 3 and a Toyota Corolla, I'm sure they would have wanted a new car for themselves as well. So, I'm going to get them a new X1/X2. I've got the rest of my life to make money anyways.

I'm also in the process of looking for my 1st home and I plan on renting out a room to help with the mortgage. Now that I don't need to pay for my tuition (which was soul sucking), I need to learn about investment. My goal is to keep as little cash on me as possible, and let it grow/invest in an investment account and a house.

Thanks for your post again! Those Japanese cars last freaking forever.

That's actually the reason I haven't bought "up" yet. I bought properties while holding on to my E90 M3.

I could have paid off an E46 instead but I also realized I need to "live a little", and in turn, push myself out of my comfort zone to stretch my abilities.

As odd as it sounds, one of the best decisions I ever made in my life was stretching my finances and buying my M. I wake up every morning excited to start my day with that drive, and finish work every day excited to drive home.

Well, because cars are depreciating assets, I don't believe in "saving up" to buy a car. But then again, you got a M car and no one can argue against that.

I've been posting in the M2 forum because I think in a few years time, I'm hoping to get into a M2 Competition. My Mazdaspeed 3 still has a few years left. I just bought new tires for it and likely to be its last set of tires. So when those go, so will the car.

More in the 25-31 age group live at home or renting (no mortgage) then ever before. Maybe income going to nice cars. The struggle will be seen later. As a rental investor, I'm not complaining.

43.

My admiration of BMWs started long time ago, around 1995. I was 20 and regularly saw this really nice light blue e36 coupe parking in the driveway of a house in the neighbourhood.

I was broke as most 20 year olds were, living in post-communistic eastern Europe but I knew that one day I would own a car like that.

It took another 15 years driving Hondas and moving to Canada before I was able to buy one - slightly used 325, by then it was the e46 generation. I was very impressed by the car.

But it was a 325. I supercharged it but it still had an open diff, only 5 speeds, soft swaybars, etc ...

When my family unexpectedly doubled in size (twins) I swapped it for another e46, this time a touring. At first I was only going to transfer the twinscrew supercharger and CSL replica wheels but the mod bug hit me hard. I ended up swapping in an engine and 6 speed transmission from a 330, added LSD, PSS10 coilovers, headers, intake, and bunch of other parts while also upgrading the supercharger to stage 2.

That was a great sleeper looking car that stayed with me for about 8 years.

About two years ago I had to start thinking about eventually replacing the wagon, it was getting old. I fell in love with the M2 the first time I saw it. OMG, this is the updated e46 M3 I always wanted! So I started slowly saving up. I picked up some lucrative contracts and made pretty good money over the two years.

I was going to wait another year but with the introduction of the M2C and significant price hike in Canada I found one of the last pre-LCI used cars with only 5000kms in the right colour and with the right number of pedals.

I am of the same vintage.

I disliked but respected the boxy E36 and it was about 3 years after you that my opinion of BMWs changed overnight, circa 1998, when I first saw the new E46 328i. I, too, lusted for an E46 M3 (or at least a 330i ZHP) though I never owned one (an E46 - tho not M3 - didn't come into [affordable] range for me until its final year, at which point I was not in the market for a sedan).

I agree the M2 is as close we can get to an E46 M3 these days - when the M2 was revealed, I wanted one just about as badly as when I first saw the E46 M3! (Side note: also lusted just as much for an E39 M5 .)

Happy first anniversary to my M2 today.

2nd M car, but first new car

I never liked buying new cars because of depreciation but this is a car I always had my eye on before it was released. I didnt even plan on buying it ..it all happened so fast. Never imagined spending 65k(cdn) on a car but I decided to take the plunge.

I called around looking for used m2 and 240i and then I realized the discounts available on a new m2 and the low finance rate. It was the perfect calling. Made an offer 5k under MSRP and got it.

Started from
(All manual cars)
18 - protege5
19 - Mazda3
21 - Bmw e46 m3(realized I was to young to afford maintenance so I sold in 8months)
22- 2010 mazdaspeed3
24- Ap1 s2000
26 - Ap2 s2000
And finally
28 - LCI M2

First non white car too. I often think if I should of got the AW m2 lol
