Anybody know if the M2 Competition's larger brakes use a different rotor setup?
I'm thinking that next year I will probably be due to change pads, and hopefully by then some of the 6pot + 4pot setups will be available lightly used or as new OE parts... but I'd rather use Girodisc rotors than the BMW stockers.

Yeah... and it looks like the larger rotors and calipers make 18" wheels impossible too. That's a non-starter for me since my winter setup is 18". So I guess I'll be moving to Girodisc eventually

Over in the M3/M4 brakes section Golan at Auto Talent reported that Alcon has come out with both front and rear rotors for the M2/M3/M4. I pmed for pricing but haven't heard back yet. They look very nice.

We do, the concern is not the two piece issue alone, the oem hat is not reusable where aftermarket options are which if you track saves you money by just replacing the ring. Also most of us want to get away from drilled rotors as they have a tendency to crack sooner than slotted which is why you never see them on a modern race car, finally we are all looking for better cooling ie more vanes.

I’m not an expert but the folks at Essex are and they talk about both the number of vanes and the shape to help increase air flow. The oem are really a perfect match for the 98 percent that use their car on public roads and do some spirited driving, they are even fine for a fair amount of track driving but when they come up for replacement those that track are probably best served with one of the aftermarket options. On the road you might get 300 degree temps if you really brake hard and that is for a short period, on track this weekend my rotor temps were over 650 for 20 mins, of course that is using track pads don’t know the actual temp because my temp gun maxes at 650.

I know it ratchets up the costs a bit, but I completely solved this issue by buying a lightly used AP Racing front BBK on the M3/4 forum for less than $3k. The AP Factory disc is 378mm x 36mm.
I ran the fuel tank dry in a long session (50min) and had zero fade with excellent modulation. Last edited by ZM2; 05-22-2018 at 07:37 AM.. |

Do you know if AP kit you have is compatible with 18" wheels, esp OE 513m ??

I still think the main issue with the M2 braking is the caliper, not disc. Even with a slightly larger aftermarket disc, the caliper paint is still going to change colors and you’re likely to torch the dust boots like I did. So, I went the BBK route and knowing early on the front M2C brakes were going to be too big for 18” wheels, I searched to find the largest disc that would work which is the AP Factory setup. The AP Essex kit is 372x34 with the same caliper, and I’m guessing it performs just as well. Both AP kits are way better than the M2C brakes, so good value if you can find them used. The brake bias is slightly more to the front now, so maybe I’ll add the rear M2C brakes down the road. They’ll probably work with 18s and I’m guessing are a lot cheaper than a rear AP kit. Don’t really care for the M2C red caliper paint, tho. |

The range of AP calipers that Stillen uses are Radi-CAL 1 road car callipers (that can also be used perfectly on track). They are equipped with a protective paint coating, dirt seals, pad anti-rattle clips... The Pro 5000R AP calipers that Essex uses is from the range that is aimed purely at motorsport applications , no paint finish, no dirt seals, no pad anti rattle clips If you have a M2 that does 85% street and 25% track I would lean towards AP Radi-CAL road calipers from Stillen if you want AP brakes. I have AP brakes on my Z4M and they are amazing (braking on track with the same pads is the same as my friend his GT3 RS) https://www.stillen.com/brakes/brake...mw-m2.html?p=1 According to AP racing headquarters; using motorsport calipers a lot on the street (year round) wil have some disadvantages and they are build for different purposes then street cars that see some occasional track time....it's designed for pure track cars and they need different maintenance/care, are more fragile (no paint finish / no dirt seals) and make more noise.

There are versions of the Pro 5000R calipers that have dirt seals and anti rattle clips. That’s what I have on my car. No ill effects running them on the road year round, except the DS2500 street pad dusts quite a bit.
Because of my experience with the stock M2 calipers, I’m now leery of painted calipers. The Radi Cal is AP tho, so maybe the paint will hold up. |
