Not really, running cost might actually be pretty close. Stuff gets cheaper when you strip out the crap that will go wrong.

Injectors, HPFP, E-Waterpump, etc are not on the E36. Unless you planning on stripping the engine. S52 is way more reliable than any N motor.

Glad my local dealer doesn't ever go over MSRP. What trash tactics.

E36 has its own cooling issues (Waterpumpthermostatradiator every 60k), plus some Vanos issues, Power steering hydraulic leaks from hell. They're cheap to maintain, but not perfect. Plus all of the rubber and plastic will be less than 20 years old. I love my E36, and will drive it as long as possible...hoping another 5-10 years, but a new M would be a fun upgrade on the track. By then I will have saved enough owning an E36 that I'll be able to treat myself, though I'll probably be too old and stingy...

Older naturally aspirated S engines aren't as cheap or reliable to track as you think. For the M2, HPFP issues have been relatively sorted on the N55 for a few years and injectors/water pump will most likely not be a recurring problem on a stock engine that only sees 3000 miles annually.

I don't think the M2 was designed for new customers, but rather current enthusiasts of the brand.

I'll just pay a little bit more and be in a M3/M4, and be much, much happier.

We are possibly the smallest dealership in the Northeast. We aren't even considering going over MSRP, we don't do that here. Take care of the people and everything else falls into place.

I've tracked 1 S52 and 2 S54s. I know pretty well the costs associated with tracking them. But then again, I may just be luckier with those cars.

You can easily get it from a So Cal dealer, or out of state; just not the first one. Market forces will dictate. They'll have the only super hot, in demand car that's not selling for some reason, lol.
That's the Bay Area for you... Businessmen and techies drive the price up for everybody sadly

This is what I did.

I love the M2, but I will not risk an increase on a general production run vehicle when I am able to get more car for my money. Being first in line was never an important thing for me, perhaps down the line if I am still interested in the car, then I'll have a look. LCI will come along down the road, anyway. That's what made the M3 work out well for me.

Anybody remember the 150k markup at the launch of the i8? Someone bought.

I am #1 at a "small dealer," with a promise in writing guaranteeing that slot, and "no higher than MSRP" as a price.

He might not get many allocations, but I only need him to get one

Some of the worst rip-off price stories I've been hearing on this board, in fact, originate in California at pretty big dealers...

My sales person at East Bay BMW stated that they never mark up any of their vehicles above MSRP. If you're in the SF Bay Area, you should give them a call - I had a very good experience there and received a nice discount on my M4. Now whether you're one of the lucky few who can get an allocation this early in the production cycle, not so sure about that one.

It's a nifty car but I wouldn't spend a dime over MSRP. In fact, I wouldn't even pay MSRP. It is a regular production car, and there is going to be lots of competition at that price point.

It just depends on when you want the car. Unless BMW significantly increases production above their current plans then the M2 will remain constrained and priced at MSRP for the rest of 2016. Anyone willing to wait could probably get a discount in 2017 albeit a small discount. The average discount on an M3/M4 in the Bay Area is still just $1500-$2000.

Hahaha...no.

Customers are now being told 2018 deliveries in a lot of countries, and well into fall 2017 in North America.

Like it or not, it's a limited production car. Not limited as in total numbers but limited in terms of how many they can make a year. The demand is far outstripping the supply but given the fact that Leipzig's main focus is the bulk sellers (1's, 2's, Tourers), I doubt BMW will make many efforts to increase it. Plus the harder it is to get one, the more press/praise they get.
