this is so infuriating. Why release residuals and MFs when there are no friggen cars other than the HEAs? WTH!
I was so hoping to finish my week looking for fights, hotels and roads. THIS ISN'T FUN ANYMORE

Yep, $7k spread out over 27 months equals to $259 additional monthly before taxes & fees. Porsche to customer "but you're so lucky, instead of the $259 per month, we'll let you pay it all up front!"

Don't know if it is different in Canada but I was just told by the GM of my dealership that the residual for the M2 is 59% for 36 months at 24,000km's or 61% at 20,000km's per year. This was based on an email he had just received from BMW Canada.
Also, lease interest rate of 5.9%. I can't imagine the residual is 10% higher in Canada than the US.

I actually worried his note to me was a typo so I wrote him back to clarify it was 59% and not 49% and he confirmed based on the documents he had from BMW Canada.
Maybe it's different in Canada? Maybe he keeps reading the BMW documents incorrectly? Maybe this thread is a big conspiracy by Audi and MB? It's a big mystery at this point... all I know is the lease rate on my M2 will be 61% residual and the payment is $500/month less than my M4

59% for 24,000km lease
+2% for 20,000km leases I never put more than 16,000kms on a car a year so I always go low mileage leases and, therefore, higher residuals.

I think 5.9% translates to a MF of almost .0025 so if there is a different residual between U.S. and Canada a portion of the difference may be getting made up through higher annual interest over the lease term in Canada. Maybe BMW is forecasting their expected future FX rates / trends into residuals? It is an interesting difference presuming the U.S. residual is correct.
Edit: Do you know the current residual and MF on a new M4 with comparable mileage?

That doesn't come close to making up the difference. There is still a $200 USD diff in monthly payment with a %10 residual difference and 5.9%

I'm not sure how you came up with a $200/mo. difference factoring in interest. Even if you ignore the higher interest a 12% residual difference on a $50K car = $6,000 / 36 mos. = $167/mo. lower depreciation for the higher residual. However, the finance fee (interest) at .002458 (5.9%) would be almost $200/mo. or nearly double .00135. Higher residual / higher interest (MF) is better but by around $70/mo. not $200. Need to remember that lease interest is not calculated the same as a loan that amortizes to zero. Mo. Interest = (gross cap cost + residual) X MF or use a financial calculator with PV as (gross cap cost), FV as residual and MF X 2,400 as interest rate to solve for payment.

I'm not saying buying a sports car is the good financial advice, but ppl putting huge somes of money down when they could be investing it seems stupid.

How many thousands are planned is still unknown but whatever the figure is, it will likely be significantly less than M3/M4, at least 50 percent less. While the M2 will not hold its value anywhere near as well as the 1M, there is no doubt there will be fewer M2 than M4... So the real question is what is the likelihood that the M2 holds its value better than the F80 M4 over time just as the 1M has held its value over the E90 M3. |

I work for BMW when they first come out residuals are usually set low then they increase them. The G12 7 was a 53% residual in Dec now it's 58% |
