There are these things called hills and even mountains that some of us have to navigate every day. I'd love to see you try to get around my neighborhood in an M2 on snows right now.

You'd be surprised what a good set of snow tires can do for a rwd car....

that being said, don't be stopping on the hills regardless of what you drive lol.

I had a chance this past week (Wednesday) to test drive a 6MT AW 2017 240i that has been sitting on my dealer's lot for almost a year; this was in the process of a visit where I ended up placing an order for an M2. I had previously test-driven an M2 about a month earlier.

I really liked the interior of the M240i, other than for the electronics and the Nav/i drive screen. This criticism is the same for me on the M2. Otherwise, i thought the interior of the M240i was pretty nice. The power was certainly more than adequate. I liked the manual transmission. Overall, other than for the EPS, I thought the car was quite a bit nicer and more modern in some positive ways than my 135i coupe, which I am planning to trade in on the M2 I have ordered.

What I did not like and could not live with was the way that electric steering has been executed on this car, even in "sport plus" mode. I should add that I'm not a huge fan of EPS, period, and find the EPS in the M2 to be barely acceptable, although I have ordered one nonetheless. The EPS on the M240i was on the other side of "acceptable" for me.

If you are somoene to whom steering feedback is essential, then the M240i is probably not your car. Otherwise, I believe it has a lot to recommend it.

It does make me laugh that people can't have an objective conversation - kind of like "how dare you say anything negative in this forum, we are all fanboys here!"

just went from 16 cayman s to ordering an 18 m240i

chose it over the m2 because the b58 was more torquey and less laggy than the n55
also the m240i rode better and i have tired of the rough ride of my x73 cayman

Just 2 weeks ago I test drove a 2017 Cayman DCT and a 2017 Boxter stick. I was disappointed with the 4 cylinder engine. It had considerably less acceleration and more turbo lag than my M235i and when I started it up the Boxster it sounded like a Karman Gia. The handling was great but fairly stiff. I decided that if I make a move to Porsche, it will have to be a 911 6 cylinder.

That's exactly what I had.

It was the best car I've ever owned, and I wish I still had it. But there were a lot of utility/practicality trade-offs I don't deal with in my F80.

I rarely drive the F80 just to drive, and it has a kick-ass stereo...the 981 was driven for no reason at all, all the time, and I hardly ever even used the radio - it sounded sooooo good.

Just depends on what you want and need.

It's a shame the new ones sound so bad, hope they do end up dropping the 4.0 into the 718 like the rumors suggest

That might be the best car they've ever made (yes, I realize how insane that would be), but I think it would be true.

Can you imagine a mid-engine 718 with a 9K RPM GT-spec 4.0L engine?

It would be epic. Truly.

for what its worth i test drove a 235i when they first came out as a possible change from my 14 cayman S
i was uninspired to do so then mainly due to turbo lag
3 years later i am going from a 16 cayman s to an 18240i partly because i am even more bored with rhe 981 but also partly because te b58 is much more inspiring

Interesting how different some of us are.

I went from the 235 to the 981 CS. I don't have it anymore (moved into F80 ZCP for utility based reasons), but it was far and away the best car I've ever owned.

And the sound...my god the sound...I will break the bank someday to have a F6 that wails to 9K RPM. It's that good IMO.

I definitely don't have those kinds of means - but maybe if the 718 GT4 gets a true GT-spec engine...that might be within a respectable level of insanity.

I guess I can see that.

Mine was my DD - and there were times (when taking someone to a business meeting for instance), when the exhaust was a bit too loud and the engine wail might have been unexpected.

Have you driven the 718 yet? I haven't had the chance - I am guessing the sound difference is pretty substantial, but the car is supposed to be MUCH faster overall. I do think I would miss the visceral nature of the 981 though, because the M3 is very very fast...but that's not as exciting as it once was perhaps...

I have - I've driven my father's 718 S a bunch of times - although neither of us had ever owned a Porsche before, pops had driven many and came very close to buying one at least twice in the past. I had no prior Porsche driving experience before, but I've heard the sound of so many flat-six Porsches in person over the years, I can say the sound is very different, and not in a good way:

no interest in the 718...

i have had 4 pots before...but once i went 6cyl i never went back.. its not just about the sound its also about the smoother more balanced nature of a six
