Moonroof

You guys equipped with M2 Moonroof, can you tell me how much it encroaches on your headroom?

Here in the USA, its being offered for the first time on the '18 production, and I ordered mine with one... But never having had the opportunity to sit in an M2 with a moonroof, Im concerned about how much headroom I'll lose.

I have a 135i now with moonroof, and E36M3 before that also with moonroof, and never had a problem.. But this time its sight unseen so Im concerned. I guess I can always find a 2 series equipped with one to sit in and compare. The height of an M2 and my current 135i is about the same on the external dimension, so, if the height of the headliner is about the same also, it should be comparable to what Im driving now. I hope.

Thanks.

Someone here stated they just sat in a 2 series coupe (230i, 240i, whatever) with a moonroof to make sure they fit (2 series have moonroof options avail in the US).

I had the same concern so I went to my local BMW dealer, scoped out the 2 series with moonroofs and asked to sit in one. I fit but I was a little surprised at how much it does take away - others have said like 1 - 1.5 inches. I'm 5'7" by the way.

For me I "need" a sunroof - I live in SoCal.... :-)

What's the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof?

Sunroof is metal and moonroof is glass.

I would never go with both moonroof and electric seats. It depends on how long you are of course and how high you like to have the seat. But I usually have mine at the bottom and I have manual seats so no biggie.

I opted out of electric seats just to get the moonroof. And I'm in a wheelchair and adjust my seat every time I enter the car to take in my wheelchair so I would have preferred electric seats.

I thought a sunroof opens completely whereas a moon roof only tilts open. Like on an Audi S5/RS5.

Nah, it is as Spa2k said. Moonroof is made of glass and sunroof is any body panel that opens if you go on what most people refer to them as. But they are all sunroofs, moonroof is just a marketing name that Ford invented back in the 70s.

You guys in int'l markets who have the moonroof installed, is this essentially the same moonroof offered as standard equipment on the M240I described as follows?

"2-way power glass moonroof with "one-touch" operation and sliding interior sunshade"

I went with the spaceroof.

Normally, a moonroof doesn't have a track mechanism for sliding underneath so it weighs less than a sunroof. Structurally they both compromise body integrity and torsional stiffness.

Edit: My reference is from years ago when you could easily add a pop up glass panel. Moonroof you can see through and now BMW calls them that and they slide as well. Remember my buddy adding a pop-up moonroof to his Ford Pinto.....what a classic that was!

Yes, it is the same as the regular series car.

That's pretty much untrue for today's cars, almost all of which have an open area in the roof structure that doesn't change whether or not a moon/sunroof is installed. That's why you couldn't get one in a Subaru WRX until a couple of years ago; the original roof structure had a structural member running side to side where the moonroof normally would go, and Subaru had to modify the structure to make room for it due to customer demand.

OTOH, a moon/sunroof does add maybe 20-50 lbs of weight up high, which will very slightly raise the center of gravity - important only to a couple of percent of track-day drivers qualified for, and capable of, setting record laps in their M2s.

Okay, thanks for the info.....I know that structures have improved quite a bit, but still thought there would be some strength reduction. Now on a Ford Pinto it probably didn't make a difference either way :-]

The purposes of having a hole in the roof are decidedly different for a BMW vs. a Pinto. For the BMW, it's ventilation, light and a connection with the outdoors. For the Pinto, it's an escape hatch for when you get rear-ended and the fuel tank explodes.

No: https://www.carthrottle.com/post/sun...ce-and-safety/

Fringe benefit of a sliding roof: extra escape route...

Correct. And if you let it slide open with one brief pull at the button: once the roof stops almost at the end, one further pull at the button and it slides open till the end.

Driving wih tilted roof is relaxing. Even in the rain. Fresh air enters the interior. No noisy drag as with side windows partially opened.

Sunroofs are available in US as of MY18. You will have less headroom, which may not be an issue if you are 5' 10" or less. I have a 2015 228 with no sunroof. I opted out because I am 5' 11", and felt it would be an issue if using a helmet for track days, which i have done several times.

I'm 185 cm tall (about 6 feet) and I have to have the seat at the lower range of adjustability to not touch the inner lining. So with electric seats (that are higher than the manual I have) I would be forced to have it at the bottom no matter what I would have liked.

Hence my previous post that I would NEVER get both electric seats and moonroof at my height or taller. And there is no way at all for me to fit a helmet.

I guess it depends more on your torso height than your overall height. I have a 135i with moonroof. I'm 5'9" and My friend is 6'1". I have my seat several notches above the bottom setting.. When he drives it, no seat adjustments are required, and his head just grazes the headliner. The diagrams in the attached post show the headroom in the M2 is about 2.2" greater than in the 1M, which I presume to be similar to what I have in my 135i but for the fact that the 1M had no moonroof. My 135i would have even less headroom then the 1M diagram shows, obviously, because it does have a moonroof.. . I'm hoping this analysis holds up supporting my moonroof order!

http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...8&postcount=12

Here are the specs for 135i which I believe only comes moonroof equipped.. strangely it shows the same headroom as the spec for the 1M :
