It might be worth a check on rates from https://www.erieinsurance.com/ who I've been with forever.
I'd hate to be a male under 24 trying to get insurance... |

Mine just went up (I have MY 2016). I called and they said the classification symbol went up from 50 something to 60/65 and that was the reason for the increase. They said that it was reclassified after a year (I had one of the first M2s) and at that time (April 2016) they used comparable cars. Seems like a bunch of BS to me. I drove my car a total of 4k miles in one year (Northeast winters suck most of the time and it's my "Pleasure Car"), so to get the costs down more, I'm thinking about taking a higher deductible (from $100 comp to $500 and from $500 Collision to $1000). Insurance as a whole just pisses me off!!

You guys haven't seen anything yet. In the next 18 months ish rates for everyone will be going up if you have a newer car with all the safety nannies.

Just got my insurance rates for my new M2. Cost is $110 more per year than it was with my M235i (same coverage limits and same insurer). That, to me, is really reasonable.

Who says tech helps avoid accidents? It can cause them too - that's why rates will go up.
Two weeks ago, I was test-driving a new Honda that had all the nannies. While driving down the Interstate, I changed lanes a safe distance ahead of the car in that lane, the nannies interpreted my move as driving off the road and hit the brakes hard. I barely escaped being rear-ended by a driver who probably didn't expect the car in front of him to change lanes and hit the brakes hard at 70 mph in the middle of nowhere. My wife has experienced similar moments in the Ford Fusions her company rents. I can make my own mistakes, thanks. |

I think that if you change lanes, hit the brakes, and get rear ended, it's the fault of the car behind you. Even if you lock them up and come to a complete stop in the middle of the freeway. You still have a rear ended car, so being at fault vs. not at fault is maybe not the first thing on your mind, but hey, at least it's not your fault so your rate shouldn't go up? Oh, another shout-out here for USAA. My rate when DOWN a couple bucks when I got into the M vs. my 2009 370Z. $76/month for the M. Last edited by DETRoadster; 04-25-2017 at 09:09 AM.. |

The thing that bothers me the most about the nannies is that even if the auto manufacturers make them "foolproof," ingenious fools will find a way to misuse them - or misuse them to their advantage. And if you think lawsuits for things like unintended acceleration or Mustang GT350s going into limp mode were bad enough, wait until the court dockets fill up with drivers of average capabilities suing auto manufacturers because their cars' nannies suddenly and unexpectedly did something to cause them to "lose control." What a goldmine for attorneys! Finally (and to stay on topic), I'll give a shout out to Nationwide for its very reasonable rates on performance vehicles. |

Mine went up w/ the M2 (compared to my 135i) but my agent put a clause in the coverage that only OEM parts would be used in the event of an accident. I don't mind paying extra for that. Otherwise, your insurance company can use "of like kind and quality" parts that are cheap knock-offs.
And, insurance coverage/rates vary state to state. It's difficult to make apples-to-apples comparisons. No-Fault states have much lower costs, for instance.

GEICO has always given me fantastic rates for my MB daily. Helps that I haven't had any accidents, tickets, etc in over 5 years and I took a defensive driving class to further lower my already low rates.
I've never really had good experiences with State Farm; they were never willing to work with me, and always offered me much higher rates than either GEICO or Progressive. |

I signaled - in fact, I gave the Honda the finger all the way back to the dealership, where the salesman told me none of the nannies had been set up, so it probably defaulted to the most extreme reactions: hardest braking for off-road excursions, strongest shudder in the steering wheel for drifting out of the lane and largest grenade launches for left-lane blockers.

I've been with Liberty for a lifetime. They bumped me over $400/year moving from my 235i to the M2. I moved the M2 to Geico and I'm paying $1740/year vs $2400 with Liberty. That's an annual savings of $660. I'm in Westchester County NY. My coverage limits are 250/500 and I was also able to move from a $1k deductible to a $500 deductible. Included in the premium I'm also paying $15/month for mechanical coverage. Yeah, I know that means nearly nothing for the warranty period, but they'll let you keep this coverage on the car long term and that may actually pay off and it is far cheaper than buying BMWs mechanical coverage near the end of the warranty period. The mechanical coverage comes with a $250 deductible per incident, but during the warranty period it's only a $50 deductible. I also just took the defensive driving course online which should save $50-70 per year and is good for 3 years. Cost of the online course was about $37.

Another thing worth being aware of - insurance rates are often tied to credit score. It's incredibly stupid (what does a credit score have to do with driving safely?)
I would think that most BMW / M-car buyers have decent credit, but you never know... so it's worth mentioning.

Don't have the car yet but when I asked for an estimate from Farmers Insurance its cheaper than what I pay for my BMW R NineT. I have another vehicle and my home through them, so not sure how much that plays into it.
