What hurts my rates is that I have kids on my policy. It doesn't matter that they are not listed as the primary drivers of the M2. They have access to the car so it jacks the rates on my more expensive cars.

Some states here require it as well but it isn't as pervasive a practice. That still doesn't stop people from just not renewing their tags though.

I pay ~600 / 6 months for 5000 a year miles with 500 deductible here in NC with GEICO. If I didn't have mechanical breakdown, It would be $500 / 6 months. NC is interesting for insurance since they base it on availability of parts as well as value and cost of those parts and all the regular stuff. Since the M2 shares a lot of parts with the 2 series, it contributes to a lower premium.

Example: My last car I had insured in WA and it was $120 a month. I moved to NC, with the same coverage, and it was $70 a month.

So yeah, as others have stated. It varies on so many factors that it's hard to compare unless you live in the same state and have the same coverage parameters, history, etc.

I live in San Francisco. My insurance is.....

I never drive it in the city really, I live at the edge of the city border and just hop on the highway so it probably only gets 5% SF miles on it, but it jacks up my rates just living here I am sure.

Moved from the DC area to the San Jose area, insurance rates for the 535i and M2 doubled

I moved to Geico and I'm in NY. I pay $15/month for mechanical breakdown.

Everyone recommends keeping at least 250/500 liability right? Don't go less than that?

The difference in cost between that and 500/1000 for me was small so I went above that. $57 a year. The cost of medical stuff is so crazy having more coverage for a bit more seemed like a good idea to me.

I skimped on collision and comprehensive because I'm most concerned with being protected from things that are going to cost me many thousands, or tens of thousands. Having to open my wallet for an extra $500 to cover my end if something does happen is worth the savings over time if nothing does happen. The math was something like if I don't have to use collision or comprehensive for 1.75 years or longer then it just saves me money to have the higher deductible....
