I've tried to defend CarPlay since purchasing my M2 last year, even going through a huge rigamarole with BMW USA to update iDrive in order to squash the bugs.

I am now firmly in the "iDrive sucks" camp. Don't bother.

How do you update it? Is it done OTA, via USB or do you actually need to bring it into the dealer?

I will test out Apple play without the iMessage pop ups today , and follow up. If you convert me I will give credit where credit is due.

At the very least I'm incentivized to try once more due to the disparity in sound quality for music. I'd like that improvement back

BMW USA approved a dealer update after a lot of drama. Not even worth it.

I would like them to update my CarPlay but they say "no updates avail"

well they = dealer

And I don't believe them.

Yeah, so from the looks of it, it has nothing to do with CarPlay and is user-defeatable. I have no problem with this.

Wow, I thought you could update it yourself easily and frequently to get compatibility and feature updates. Truly surprised that's not the case.

I believe carplay info is sent from the phone to the car, and the carplay kit itself lives in the phone OS. That allows Apple to improve it without needing the car makers to update all of the time. For instance, if you want to use spotify with carplay, you download it on your phone and not the car.. it then shows up in the phone in Carplay settings under General. This is why those with an older phone, while supported, will not get the performance they expect. It is just older hardware holding them back. My iPhone 7+ works great with Carplay. I am not saying upgrade to fix it, I am just listing why I think some have a worse time than others.

By the way, for those that do not know, go to Settings > General> carplay>your car and you can modify the carplay apps and move them around to the order that you prefer which may also help ease of use.

The updates available to users via bmw.com/update are only Bluetooth compatibility updates. The actual iDrive software in the car is much, much larger and requires a dealer. Dealers don't get compensated by BMW USA for those updates, so they have to get authorization from BMW USA if they want to be compensated for performing them.

If you have a friendly dealer, I hear they might update iDrive for you for free. But that's not confirmed.

After my iDrive was updated by the dealer, some small improvements were made - but it's still far from perfect. Still have some of the same issues as before.

Sort of correct. Essentially CarPlay is just an H.264 video stream from the iPhone, shown on the car screen device, combined with communication and audio data streams. So, if CarPlay sucks, it's CarPlay, not the car.

Google Play Music now on Carplay

Well just as i posted on another thread the lack of apps.........Google play music is now available on Carplay, good for me as although i have an iPhone I use Google Music as I have an android tablet and basically prefer it, you can upload all your music on the google cloud basically for free, its a winner!

I have also noticed the volume is far louder on the HK system than iTunes was.

I am now deleting iTunes library as I really do dislike it.

Apple Carplay now purchasable on Connected Drive Store

I had BMW service center update my MY17 software (iDrive 5.0) and Apple Carplay can now be purchased on the connected drive store. $300 in US at least. Also a side note, iDrive now has Spotify as an app for me to use on my Android. Never showed up for me before.

Updated version Number

If I'm reading this correctly you don't have the hardware to support it.

Apple CarPlay (Option code 6CP) *Launch from 09/16*
CarPlay provides BMW drivers with a new way to interact with their iPhone by making popular applications and functions available via the iDrive system in Apples familiar user interface. Using the iDrive controller, or Siri hands-free personal assistant, drivers can access their messages, Apple Maps, online music streaming or their iPhones and a growing list of features. Please note vehicles ordered for July and August production will not include option code 6CP, but will be eligible for a no-charge retrofit from 09/16.

You need Bluetooth LE and WiFi... see footnote #7

...When not factory-equipped with CarPlay™ Compatibility, vehicles must be factory-equipped with Navigation and either 6NW (Wireless Charging), 6NP (Enhanced USB and Bluetooth), or 6NS (Smartphone Integration / Enhanced USB and Bluetooth) in order to be eligible for purchase of CarPlay Compatibility via the My BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

ooo, that's a newer ISTEP than what I have. Can you post the navigation map info? Should say NBT_EVO_XXXXXXX

It should be under navigation then you should be able to find an update section.
